The official video for Aaron Watson's single "The Old Man Said".

Keep up with Aaron Watson:

Lyrics:

And the old man said, "Son, I don't have long to live"
He slowly raised his cup and he took a sip
And the old man said, "I've fought a dang good fight"
So I pulled up a chair and sat there half the night

And the old man said, "Don't take a single day for granted
Love like there's no tomorrow
Tend to the seeds you planted
Be a good friend and a brother
Love your children and their mother
And die by those living words in red"
And the old man said

"Money really ain't worth a dime"
Then gave me his golden watch, said, "It's all borrowed time"
And the old man said, "If I could do it all again
I'd spend more time loving her and a little more time fishing"

And the old man said, "Don't take a single day for granted
Love like there's no tomorrow
Tend to the seeds you planted
Be a good friend and a brother
Love your children and their mother
And die by those living words in red"
And the old man said

Don't build walls around your heart
Never shackle up your soul
Love is the only thing that you'll take with you when you go
Always be quick to forgive, forever slow to throw stones
Just like a flash, life is a dash between the birth and the bones
And the old man said, "Son, I can see the light"
Then he took my hand and he squeezed it tight
The last thing the old man said
"Don't you dare be scared of death
It's only the beginning"
And he took his last breath.

😭💔 My husband passed away October 3, 2014. He was the most amazing Husband, Dad and Bumpa. He is greatly missed by our children and grandchildren. He was a man who put God first, and our family. 2 days before he passed away he asked me to take him out on our porch and he asked me if I could hear the doves, on this old farm he was raised on and we raised our children on. He then sang "On the Wings of a Snow White Dove" to me. I knew then that his time was near. The last words he said were, "I wish I could box you all up and take you with me". He was a man above men. He never raised his voice to me or a hand. That to me is the definition of a real man.
This song truly speaks of Him. 😇💙 I'm not a widow, for my husband awaits me on the other side 🎚🙏💙

My daddy is still with me in his 90s today but we are still negotiating our relationship. The good thing is that we will meet again in eternity! God is Great! (as i compose this response I realize how much i love him!)

This song is so deep. A man can pour out his heart in a song with true meaning and you don't hear it on the radio, yet some guy sings a song someone else wrote with no meaning and it's blasted all over the place. This world is back words. Keep the TRUE music coming Aaron Watson. God Bless!

I grew up in a dysfunctional family, an abusive father, sexually, physically, and emotionally. My Mother found a decent guy when I was about 4 years old named Jim. He was very adamant that he wasn't taking the role of my Dad, he was dating my mom for the first 8-ish years of their relationship. Then something changed, he started opening up once I was old enough to go to the local gym. We started training together, he used to lift with Earnie Frantz after he finished his hockey career. So the lifting was pretty brutal for a preteen through high school. The day I left for Marine Corps boot camp was Father's day 2014, it was the first day he called me his son. I spent the last 22 years of my life idolizing, training with, working for his company, and bonding with this man. He recently passed away, the morning of April 4th I got the worst phone call I will ever get, he died of a heart attack. To those of you struggling to stay afloat, to fight for that purpose or goal in life, keep going. I miss my "Dad" daily, but he never wanted anyone to compromise character or effort. Rest easy Jim Allen.

The violin in the beginning on the full version really set the mood. Wish they wouldn't have removed it on this video. Sure makes me think of my pappy. God bless

Our scars are here to remind us that the past was real. I firmly believe that grief is love with nowhere to go. But when you can write a song about the thing(s) that matter most in life, and combine it with wisdom from someone that's lived life WOW!! Just wow!! Beautiful!! Another hit from the Amarillo boy!! LOVE IT!! This of course coming from the un-biased opinion of an Amarillo born and raised native. <3

I've been diagnosed with stage 3 bladder cancer. Undergoing treatment.
It's brought my Family, My Ex (Best Friend) Our Son so much closer, sucks that something like this brings us closer. Also ya find out who your "True" Friends are.
All that said, I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to give up.
For all the folks out there with diseases like this fight it with all your heart ❤. The Family and Friends stand by them and for them.
Offensive to some, know this,
"My Heart ❤ and Prayers 🙏 to all".

I am bawling like a baby.... My husband's father was just give 3-6 months to live and my husband can't be here right now so the little moments on the front porch with him, making sure I know how to keep his son in line the rest of his time mean so much more now and this song hit the heart head on💙

I've been listening to this song the last few weeks as my dearest cousin, and the closest thing I had to a sibling, was in the last stages of life on earth. ALS took him this morning at 46 years old! Thank you for this song!
