If you're patient, you can actually wait for the silkworms to mature enough that they leave the cocoons, and they are collected afterwards without having to kill any. This is a premium product called "ahimsa" silk.

Don’t worry y’all! They’re in their liquified state usually at this point, which means they have no nervous system to feel the heat. Along with that, they’ve been domesticated for so long that they can’t fly AND don’t even have mouths which means they starve and die within 1-2 weeks, so honestly that’s more cruel. Of course, we can’t take back the past of that domestication, so buying silk is totally fine! But there are alternatives if it’s still discomforting to think about.

When I was a child, in South Africa🇿🇦, Silk worms were pets 😅

I love that nothing is wasted when they do this process. The silk is used for fabric and the bugs are used to eat or medicines.

there are monocultures of those mullberry leaves they feed to the silkworms. Depending on those agricultural practices, they may have more cruel and far reaching impacts on animals. Just because you can see the worm dying here you think about it, but agriculture driven habitat destruction is a driver of tens of thousands of more pain and death for insects, animals and people, so arguably you should think about those too, or even consider those impacts more even though it is trickier to count them.

This is mulberry silk whereas non mulberry silk such as Eri and Muga is completely harmless, also known as ahimsa silk.

It’s fascinating to think that this same material has been worn for over 5, 000 years at this point
