After watching this a few times, I’ve finally figured out why this hooked me so deeply. So here in America our films are riddled with sex and greedy impulse. Even our heroes are shallow. The villains are usually more interesting. Now, I’ve never watched anything quite like these Asian dramas. Besides Crouching Tiger... I’m not easily driven to tears, nor do I read or watch anything with the tag romance in it. After watching this and The Pillow Book, then after a few others, I’ve come to the conclusion that the heroes (Mark/Vengo) are truly stoically iconic, they are quiet yet powerful, icy and at the same time deeply passionate. The heroine (brilliantly played by Yang Mi) is not some vacuous twit, acting helpless and useless. Her sense of duty and passion are equal to the heroes. The villains are either just pure evil or they are driven by petty desires because they could never be like their rivals. Even the young ghost lord can’t truly be seen as evil. The tragedies that we want so badly avoid, are necessary and have to happen to propel the protagonists to a greater more noble outcome. The heartache is built throughout the story, each trial forcing you to connect with the characters on a deeper level. The CGI melts away, the characters become real, by the time the climactic tragedy hits, we are fully immersed and it is soul wrenching. This also makes Ye Huah and Bai Qian’ s final moments all the more beautiful. I found myself crying just as hard at their reunion as I did at his death. The music is devastatingly beautiful. Just hearing the first opening notes of this song constantly sends a chill through my body and I tear up. I can’t get away from the and ELoD... I keep lingering, rewatching clips. I’ve joined fan groups for this where we all share clips and videos. As I have been on all kinds of threads and video comments, I see that this is practically a phenomenon once people see it, they can’t let it go. I think it’s because it hits so deeply that it is like truly falling in love for the first time, but also losing it. These two sagas are highlighting the purest ideal of love and loss. I cannot quantify my awe at how beautifully done these are. I think, “do these people (actors, writers, directors, producers etc...) know just how much of an effect their work has on people?” I’m sure that they know they have gushing fans who idolize the actors’ faces... what I mean is do they get that the have really touched people? I’m ordering both to own. I doubt I’ll ever not cry at this song, nor will I tire at watching the series -just musing.

I'm not sure if any other drama will ever be this good! Everything from the chemistry between the actors, the imagery, the music, and the plot are all so good that the emotion impact is unbelievable! I. AM. OBSESSED. WITH. THIS. DRAMA!

Bravo to everyone involved! You all deserve awards for this!

I have watched this drama uncountable times. Whenever i am sad or low, i watch a few episodes of this drama. It's like my comfort pill. The amount of emotions and beauty shown here, nothing else can match that. Yes, this has definitely uplifted my real life expectations. I cannot go into shallow bonds, my bonds are deep and true. I just need a Ye Hua in my life. God please😌

I binged watched this drama on Netflix in January of 2020 and in three days. This was is my first c-drama and I have to say it is the best. And the soundtrack oh my gosh! Beautiful! There’s just something about this soundtrack and specifically this song that captures the sweetness and the heartbreak of this love story. And the actors, their chemistry. oh my gosh! Mark, Mark, Mark. That's all I can say.

I fell in love with Ye Hua... For me, Mark Chao as Ye Hua enchanted me not only because of the way he looks and his expressive body language (OMG! those eyes, those stares, the tone of his voice!) but because of his amazing personality. It is like Bai Qian said of him in one of the episodes: "He is fierce but steady, calm and yet majestic." What a perfect description! 😍
