First Look: iPhone 4 and FaceTime

The new video chat feature, called FaceTime, works using the iPhone 4's back- and front-facing cameras. It will remain a Wi-Fi-only feature until carriers can catch up with the bandwidth needed.

@MyNeighborhood FaceTime IS free on both iPod Touch and iPhone 4, you just need to have another iPhone 4 user and for them to have access to WiFi to make the video call. You can essentially look up a contact FROM your iPhone 4, choose one and press the FaceTime button to just make a FaceTime call (free, and thats if you KNOW that person has iPhone 4), you dont have to necesarily have to call them and then activate FaceTime. iPhone 4 user here, and have used FaceTime.

yeah, although I like technology, it seems to me that when some companies says "this new thing is THINER" people go crazy like idiots.

a few months ago a friend of mine (who loves ipods) showed me how he can talk with friends while looking at whom he is talking to "face-time" using his old ipods (he has 3 btw)

@TheJerS Yes. it is only compatible from iphone 4 to iphone 4. And both hones need to be on wi fi.

The ability to use the outward facing camera seems much more appealing to me. Showing someone what I'm seeing would be cool, but staring at each other's faces would just get old fast, and is probably why existing video calling just never caught on.

No offence, but are video calls new in USA? We've had them in Hong Kong and in the UK for about 5 years on other phones. I remember being shocked when the first iPhone wasn't 3G, and even more shocked when the second one didn't have an inward-facing camera.

The new iPhone looks good and everything, but video calls are nothing special in many markets.

@NinjaCheeseBurger same as sony Ericsson's. The only thing is that they require a different 3G network only used in Europe and Asia. Iphone will use WIFI instead. very smart because it wont cost any extra to use the service while 3G video calling cost an arm and a leg. Very smart for Apple.

i like this iphone but im staying with my HTC evo come on guys u have to agree they did a pretty good job i guess all it takes is some compition (HTC Evo) to make them make a good i phone . they fixed their battery they added video caling higer resolution stronger glass wow pretty good job. Every can admit that the HTC Evo and the Iphone 4 are both good Phones

@Jbanto well keep your iphone i have another blackberry and i am happy with it. more so than i was with the iphone.
