Thanks for posting this. I've been thinking about this movie for the first time since I watched it upon release. I remember it being a three-hour epic, the first part of which was truly sublime. The last hour or so dragged on, but the cinematography remained so beautiful throughout the entire movie that I managed to hang in till the end. Bergman and those who followed mastered the art of pathos. Watching a Bergman movie is like listening to your favourite indie rock band whose tunes are suffused with sadness. And it is the sadness that is somehow uplifting, if that makes any sense.

I read a review of the movie in 1992 in which the author said the music was too "inadequate" to serve as a soundtrack. He actually said that.
