Kensington should use this video to advertise. Just recaption the end: "Kensignton Locks. Stronger than your laptop."

If anything, this test shows that laptop manufacturers need to reinforce the lock mounting points alot better or make it that trying to rip out the kensington lock would destroy the laptop beyond repair.

That lock should have a circuit which would detect the break and then shut the power down so that if the hard drive is encrypted, the encryption keys would be erased from the system memory when the laptop is stolen, before the thief can get access to the files. That could help in case if someone is primarily trying to steal data on that computer

This is the only video I can find on the internet with a type of stress test like this. I imagine every single laptop on Earth will break just as easy.

I don't think with a lock this flimsy preventing theft is what it's about.
Ripping out the lock this way will always result in damage to the laptop, and always in the location where the lock was located.

This makes the device easily identifyable as stolen because that sort of damage couldn't really have happened any other way.

I think they are great for what I want to use them for because it would be pretty easy to sneak a laptop out of a uni cafe but not if you have to rip it off in front of everyone

Thanks for the video, I figured this would happen. To those who criticize the video because the laptop broke and not the lock, you people are idiots. The point of the Kensington lock is to deter thieves, it doesn't matter if the lock and cable are completely indestructible, the ease of which a thief can detach the lock through force makes the Kensington lock slot completely useless. If anything, it makes you more vulnerable by leading you into a false sense of security, it only took one good yank to detach the laptop from the lock. You could be ten feet away buying a second serving of coffee at Starbucks and a thief can pick up your laptop, give it a good tug, and be bolting out the door in just a few seconds. The lock may be strong, but that doesn't matter if the a thief can still run off with your laptop without breaking a sweat, and this won't even slow him down at all. I'm glad I watched this video before buying a lock.

yeah they arent that strong but i think the point of them is so you can have them inlibraries or coffee shops to use when you want to take a quick break to the bathroom

The main point I think is that it does damage the laptop so a would be thief can't just go and sell it without it being noticed. a pawn shop or a private buyer would see the damage and not buy it, or it would be bought for a very low price because it's damaged. This would be known by a thief and would make stealing a locked laptop almost worthless. remember most thief's are going to be stealing it to sell for a profit. If you reduce the profit, it makes it almost pointless to steal.

so it's not for prevention but rather just to make the thief less happy

The point is to make someone else's laptop an easier hit than yours. If I am going to steal a laptop im going to steal the one that isnt locked vs the one that is. Same with all security. Make someone else an easier hit than you.

try that with an alluminum locking point. it broke because that laptop manufacturer used cheap polymer for its outer shell.

U people are not very smart! The name of the hole for the lock is called a Kensington. If I were stealing someones thousand dollar laptop, I could live with that little damage cuz the latop is still fully functional with minor cosmetic damage! You could sell that laptop and someone wouldn't even notice the damage even after days or weeks of use! If the Inner frame of the laptop was make of strong metal then it would then be a plausible security option.

i wonder if on those strongly built laptops the part that attaches to the lock is any more useful than on the cheap ones.
