Welcome to the Martial Arts Journey YouTube channel!

My name is Rokas. I'm a Lithuanian guy who trained Aikido for 14 years, 7 of them running a professional Aikido Dojo until eventually I realized that Aikido does not live up to what it promises.

Lead by this realization I decided to make a daring step to close my Aikido Dojo and move to Portland, Oregon for six months to start training MMA at the famous Straight Blast Gym Headquarters under head coach Matt Thornton.

After six months intensive training I had my first amateur MMA fight after which I moved back to Lithuania. During all of this time I am documenting my experience through my YouTube channel called "Martial Arts Journey".

Now I am slowly setting up plans to continue training MMA under quality guidance and getting ready for my next MMA fight as I further document and share my journey and discoveries.

The amount of times i heard ordinary people (taking martial arts classes) say they could defend themselves against a knifed attacker is way too many. Thank you for opening the eye of those, who needed a reality check. This video is saving lives.

I remember my muay thai coach reminding us not to be cocky just because we know muay thai. He said "If someone threatens you with a knife, don't rush forward to fight them just because you know muay thai. Just run away. You can use muay thai to create an opening, but run away the first chance you get." It's stuck with me since and I make sure to remind my friends who practice other martial arts of it too.

I like how Matt always resorts to verbally abusing there opponents so even if he dies the bad guy goes to prison emotionally damaged

Sobering, humbling and realistic. I’ve been doing BJJ for 13 years but sometimes overestimate my skills. This puts it all into perspective.
Good video.

This shows how hard it really is to defend yourself against an attacker with a knife

Man, this series should be written in the history of self-defense and martial arts!! It answers a hell lot of questions! Huge props to Rokas and Jeff and team!

I attended a knife defense seminar a couple of months ago, and the instructor essentially said, "All these exercises will give you a good chance...at blocking the first strike. Everything after that is anyone's guess because all attackers act differently." He even demonstrated it with another high level instructor, saying exactly what he was going to do before he did it and even then he managed to land quite a few hits. Seeing this exercise really drives home the point that no matter what, you're going to get stabbed if you fight a guy with a knife.

I've done knife defense training before and its always infuriating, because no matter what you're ending the class finding out youve been stabbed at least twice.

Shows you how important it is to not confront a 6'5 knife attacker in Robocop armor, if you are both locked in Frodo's hut.

Really goes to show how incredibly deadly and effective a knife is. There's an old saying that goes: "The fully trained and armored knight doesn't fear your biggest sword or spear. He fears your dagger."

Never realized how LONG 20 seconds could be until watching you guys in this challenge! This has been a GREAT series! Really gives me something to look forward to on Sundays.

Wasn’t it Bruce Lee who said that the best form of self defense is “ not being there” ?

“It went exactly the way I thought it would”

The common sense is strong with this one

The "first ever" self defence champion? We're not even done and I'm hyped at the idea we might be getting a season 2 as well!

How lucky are we to be watching this for free? Damn good show 👏 I hope there are more seasons, there's so many scenarios to run through.

Man. Just utterly humbling. I'll never try to confront a knife. What a reality check.

Finally. A real portrayal of so-called knife defense. Way too many martial arts pretend to teach a dream, not reality.

Very intense, what a stark contrast to last week's more cerebral episode. This series is really covering a wide spectrum of scenarios. I wonder what's next, surviving on a small life boat having to fight over food & water and surrounded by sharks?

This whole series is probably the most important contribution to the collective body of martial arts and self-defence knowledge accessible on Youtube since the Aikido vs. MMA video posted way back when.

I train HEMA, and in the German tradition, you train "Messer" (which just means "Knife" in German).

One of the first things that appear on the "main" book for messer combat it says something along the lines of:

"It doesn't matter how skilled you are. This is a Messer, may the lord have mercy on your soul."

The shorter the blade, the more umpredictable it is.
