the Sipowicz joke explained: It's a reference to the show NYPD Blue which ran on ABC from 1993 to 2005. Andy Sipowicz was one of the main characters, he was indeed a "big guy, kind of bald", and his partner Bobby Simone died in season 6 (1998, a few months before this Friends episode aired) and was replaced by Danny Sorenson, portrayed by Ricky Schroder, who people knew as the child actor from the show Silver Spoons (1982–1987).
