I think that if a financial institution forgives your debt, it is reported to the IRS as imputed income on which you have to pay taxes.

yeap it's bad. my girl friends Daughter max hers out fixing her car and can't make the payments now. 10k. mom is getting a small bank loan with a better rate to pay it off.
