We adopted a baby relinquished through the safe haven program, and fostered her during the process. Although it all went as expected, the day of her court date for TPR, I just sobbed. It was so heartbreaking. I am careful to discuss her biomom with the greatest respect and kindness & as she grows up, I hope she knows nothing but peace surrounding her birth story.

Termination of parental rights is such a difficult concept for children to understand. I've often borrowed from the grief counseling approach when working with children who are experiencing TPR. It's also important to remember that while TPR may be what's in the child's best interest, it is very common for kids to mourn the loss of that core family unit, no matter how traumatic or dysfunctional it was.

I also like to work in that I am not trying to replace their parent and that I never expect me to call me mom. I always remind them that they did not ask for any of this and it’s not their fault and I had nothing to do with being removed from their situation. That way, I feel like even though they know they don’t have control in this situation that I don’t have control in this situation either and they could be mad but I am not the one that makes the decision. I want to think of me as someone who is like a nice teacher, they get to spend some time with while the people in charge decide What’s going to happen. I will treat them with love and that in this house we never ever hit or hurt peoples feelings on purpose. If they are mad, it’s OK for them to tell me they are mad. The situation can make me mad and make them mad and they are entitled to their feelings. Those first couple days are really hard and you do sometimes really have to keep reiterating that it’s not their fault or my fault but I will help them feel as safe and comforted as I can.😢
