Misc #2 - Unboxing the Bosch PBD 40 bench drill

For a couple of years now I've persisted with my old, thoroughly sketchy, "drill press guide", or whatever you want to call it, but the other week I finally had enough.

I can't afford a proper drill press nor do I have place to put it so I decided to give what Bosch calls a bench drill a try (although I still think it's a drill press, even though it's placed on a workbench).

First impressions are nice and what little I've had time to use it I like it.

Let me know in the comments if I should do a follow up video when I've used it more.

Thanks for watching!

Thanks, I have one of these and I think it's great. I'm about to move, and your unboxing video was very helpful for me to know how to pack it back in the original box! :)

I have this drill press and its been fantastic - I built a large custom CNC machine with it and its a great lightweight and very well featured machine for the money. I like that I can shove it under the workbench without breaking my back

Thanks Martin for the unboxing video. I have been looking at getting some kind of drill press, even the old "drill press guide" style as you called it. I need something to drill 90 degree holes. I have also thought about making my own wooden DIY drill press like you can find on youtube. I really like the features of the Bosch PBD 40, you mentioned the wobble in the chuck, but did you check if it is 90 degrees square in all directions? Thanks.

Thanks for the video. You should have gotten Arboga, one of the best drill presses exist today, and made in Sweden :)

I watched this video before ordering mine and I thought it was a really nice size. Ok, dude, how tall are you? Because I am watching this video again with my PBD 40 in front of the computer and yours looks half the size of mine.

I just got a PBD 40 as a birthday gift.
Got a question, not sure if I can explain it clearly enough: when I rotate the wheel to move the drill press, I can feel the teeth on the rack (i.e. for every height of one tooth there is a slight "notch" in the feeling). If I move the wheel fast, I also hear a corresponding sound. Is it supposed to be like this, or should the rack&pinion system be fully smooth, like car's steering?
Also, after moving the drill up and down on the column, parts of the column got covered with a thin layer of black residue (oil, I guess), I guess that's normal and I should wipe&re-oil from time to time?

Your raising and lowering it wrong, read the manual.

Sounds like a noisy universal motor not an induction motor.
