The Mechanics of the Basketball Shooter

The Mechanics of the Basketball Shooting Arm
•••
This is a short look into the though process of how to create a mechanical design from a desired output motion. I wanted to make this arm mimic the actual motion of a basketball shot. The key is in the follow through of the wrist. I started with a 4-bar linkage which is connected to the stepper motor. This moves through an inverse 4-bar linkage which is connected to a compound gear train. The 2.6 to 1 compound gear train converts the 67 degrees of motion of the upper link to the 180 degree motion of the wrist. This also created mechanical advantage, because in order to achieve the 180 degree range of motion, the scoop link has to move 2.6 times faster than the activating link.

I think people who have never tried anything like this have a hard time understanding how much effort goes into a design like this. 👍 it works beautifully, sir

I tried making something like this for a middle school science fair project back in the mid oughts, but ended up having to resort to a crossbow shooting darts lol. Still a parabolic curve tho lol

I just realized that the mechanism is identical to the throwing motion done by actual basketball players.

Great design man 😊.

Like this it's dumbed down just enough I understand it could I make one probably not but awesome job man keep it up

You are amazing my friend
I have a question, what is the t program

How do you design such mechanical relationships from scratch? What calculations were involved?

Could you please make a maximum fps iron ball thrower using gears in that way that only you can. So instead of using other methods you're using gears to give it speed etc.

Can you make a video where you take us through the entire process of how you created this? I want to be able to recreate this ❤

We used a virtual four bar linkage in our robot for robotics!

What you said about the 4 bar linkage was wrong, the two ends only stay parallel if the connecting arms are of equal length, and have rotation points equally distanced at each end

I'd love to know what courses or places you got your knowledge from! I'm self taught on many of these things and would love to know where I can learn about linkages, that's something I feel I'm missing.

Awesome project, looks real natural!
