Your DIY tutorials are always so clear, concise and refreshing to watch. I got a 328i but still watched just out of curiosity.

I have a 320M sport pack G20 with B48B20A, stage 2 (270whp and 450Nm), 105 RON E25 (Premium) . So I decide to use a 5w40 LL01 8100 Motul gen2. No issues so far 😊

Yo how long should I warm up my f30 340i with the 5w30 oil. Currently I’m on 0w20 but I want to switch it up. And I live in Cali since temp makes a difference.

Why for 0-20 oils? Its because of all of the modern engines are designed and their transmissions are to keep the engine's RPMs under 2k at all times when normal driven. Note this, this is the key to all of the answers about 0-20 oils and oils in general.
All of the modern car engines have short and light pistons not to be compared with anything that was made in 90s, they figured that if to reduce a piston height they reduce weight and therefore the back flow recoil movement and with it increase efficiency overall.
Sounds great on paper, but wait, read.
Understood you may race once or twice a week for a brief moment but most of the time your 2020 car spends the most time running under 2k RPM.
Why is this important?
Because when you drive normally your transmission keeps the RPM low to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy but with it the actual PRESSURE on the piston is MUCH HIGHER than on the older engines that done the same but at 2-3 k RPM in stead of 1 - 2k while coasting down street.
That increased pressure combined with already light and short piston height causes the piston to wear the cylinder walls way faster than it would be on the older vehicles due to the natural change of the piston's geometry under stress.
To combat that they had to reduce the spacing between the cylinder wall and the piston, that reduced the side movement of the piston but because of such micron sizes, they needed a much thinner oil. That is how 0-20 was introduced to mainstream automotive, and it already existed in the motorcycle world.
If you put a thicker oil in the engine, it will act best under high temp stress but in a normal driving day to day, that I assume most of you do 90% of the time it will actually harm the engine.
BMW Engineers arent stupid.
