This presentation was recorded at the June 12, 2019 meeting of the Boulder Chapter of the Colorado Renewable Energy Society.

Full Program Description and Presenter Bio:

It has been 2 years since Ken last spoke for BCRES and A LOT has changed - most of it for the better!

Modeling and data analysis give us a clearer picture of what is possible - 100% or darn close. What is reliable - 100% or darn close. And what is likely to be cheap - 100%…

In early December, Xcel announced a 100% reduction in carbon dioxide by 2050. 2 days later, Platte River Power Authority’s (PRPA) board resolved to reach 100% non-carbon electricity by 2030. The discussion is rapidly moving from possibility to exactly what, how cheap, and how soon.

And, of course, there are still many unanswered questions. For example, our modeling points to storage helping us get to 95%, but above 95% traditional storage appears cost-inefficient. And we know that many electric utilities love to over-spend and over-invest. To have low costs, we must limit their zeal. And how do zucchinis help us understand low-cost renewable electricity?

Like all of Ken’s talks, we can expect enough clear, quick graphs to keep the numbers lovers happy, with the meaning behind the data warmly explained for the rest of us. And maybe even a few surprises and laughs along the way.

Thanks to Ken for his fabulous presentation! He provides so much great and powerful information about the transition to 100% renewable energy. His talk is thought-provoking and provides a very optimistic outlook for renewable energy. Basic economics are going to drive the rapid transition to renewable energy from solar, wind and batteries!

40:05 PRPA transmission grid way overbuilt, could handle at least 2x. 41:01 existing federal hydro more expensive than new solar, wind

Great insight into the build just subscribed and it’s a nice compact turbine I also have built a homemade 650 watts wind turbine, a treadmill motor turbine and a little but powerful ametek 30v turbine and built 2 diy solar panels, be careful in high winds one of my first turbines blew up 😕and now have only 2 wonderful turbines working daily 😊it’s very satisfying watching those things working, keep up the good work buddy 👍

This is great, thanks for all the charts!

One way to reduce the need for massive batteries is to increase the size of the addressable market by connecting various portions of the country with high voltage DC power lines. You then have power potential buyers of excess energy and more options for energy when your sun isn’t shining or your wind isn’t blowing.
