Ivermectin overdose in a cat #shorts | The Eye Vet

Ivermectin is a drug commonly used to treat external parasites like ticks, fleas etc. and also a condition called as mange, where animals loose hair due to mite infestation. When given in right dosage, it works beautifully but when it’s given in higher than normal dose, it can cause neurotoxicity affecting the brain and vision.

As veterinary ophthalmologists we regularly see dogs and cats who have suddenly gone blind due to ivermectin overdose. Sometimes these poor animals do regain vision but sometimes they succumb to the overdose.

Be very careful in calculating a proper dose of medications for each and every animal specifically keeping the species in mind. Dogs and cats can also experience ivermectin toxicity if they eat horse droppings who have been dewormed with ivermectin.

Another commonly used antibiotic which can be neurotoxic if given in high doses is Enrofloxacin. Always keep in mind: A cat is not a small dog and a dog is not a small sheep!
