The MacBook is what MOST people should buy right now.

Im a programmer and the macbooks work well for me, like you guys said gaming isnt really the priority. All of the apps needed for my workflow are here on the mac and the hardware is much nicer than most windows laptops.

But if all you are doing is web surfing and wordprocessing like Matt, then you don't need a $1000 Macbook, you could just get a $500 windows or chromebook.

The SSD is soldered on. Once it goes out, the laptop is a paper weight.

Still too expensive, can't bring myself to stomach $1000-$1500 for something that is going to be outdated in 3 years. Consumerism has taken such a hold in tech products.

As a software developer I generally prefer Linux, but I'm now on a m1 Mac and it really feels like a next-generation machine (haven't felt that way in a machine in over a decade)

My biggest hesitation is that I don't trust them any more: 1) They fight consumer right to repair and 2) They lost my faith in their reliability and lower TCO in business. My VP and I had proven that old with older Apple products, but Apple did not deliver on it over the past few years. Our macs were by far the highest TCO of any of the company computers once you factor in needing spares so we could send them back for keyboard replacements, and the lost productivity to fighting hardware and software glitches. 3) Apple's default response, even when things are clearly their fault, is to deny responsibility.

My wife got my 2010 17" MBP which was still running fine. It finally stopped getting secuirty updates, so had to push her to an M1 MBA. She LOVES it.

If all you’re doing on a Mac is web browsing, word processing and email, here’s a better question: Why do you have a computer? why not just get an iPad? I realized that all I was doing on my MacBook and ditched it for an iPad. Worked perfectly. And gaming? My series X takes care of that. The only reason to get a computer for the average consumer is if you’re gaming and that means Windows PC. Video/photo editing can be done on an iPad for the average user.

Dunno, I might just grab an ARM chromebook or a newer iPad. I really only use my laptop for web browsing, all my dev work is done on a machine my employer buys.

You are saying students and people who just browse reddit all day should get a macbook. I think you're a bit out of touch with the people with an average income. If all i do is write documents or watch videos then a Chromebook makes more sense. I think these expensive ultrabooks are more for work and not so much for teenagers and students

I can't even imagine how good this laptop is. I'm using an upgraded 2012 Pro with 500gb SSD and 16gb Ram, and apart from ok battery life and screen, it runs like a dream

A M1 Mac is good, but my G14 Ryzen powered laptop might be louder, A LOT more powerful, cost me the same (last year) as a MBP and still upgradeable.

9:41 - And it ain't that expensive! - That.... really depends on where you live. The base M1 model right now is $1200 here and that's... Definitely outside of your average student price range here.
