Fantastic album!! This is one of Deep Purple’s best albums. Ian’s singing is amazing!! He’s always been my favorite singer since 1969. Ian Paice and Roger Glover and Dom Airey still are great too. I'm 56 now, which means I was born exactly the same year DP was created as a band. I began listening to them at age 5, without knowing who they were, of course, but already with the gut feeling that they were for some unknown reason different. Around age 15 I reconnected with them, now much more consciously for sure, and since then it's been clear in my mind they are the best band ever.
When I read that Steve Morse would no longer play with DP due to family problems (God rest his wife's soul), I was really curious to see how things would turn out with the new boy in town, and, man, does it sound great!!
Of the three singles they released, 'Portable door' is clearly the best, an instant classic as far as I'm concerned.
Moving onto the entire album, the firt impression is that the average level is really high in all the songs. My choice would be the first four straight ahead, 'Show Me', 'A Bit on the Side', 'Sharp Shooter' and 'Portable Door', which is to say quite something: any of them must sound terrific live. The best in the entire album, at least in my estimation, is 'Now You're Talkin'': it has punch from the first chord and what Ian Gillan does in this song is hard to believe. To put it simply, the guy will turn 80 (f****g 80, man!!!) next year, and I challenge other singers young enough to be his children or even grandchildren to replicate what he does. Finally, 'Bleeding Obvious': many progressive metal or progressive hard rock bands take DP as a point of reference for reasons that need no explanation. Well, all those bands should listen carefully to this wonder of a song because it has it all: energy, balance, virtuosity (not to be mistaken with 'will you please finish the f****g solo', which is what tends to happen much too often in other cases), nice vocals... it's impossible to find any cracks in that song.
In brief, when DP recorded Purpendicular, they had not sounded that good in years (it was one of Jon Lord's favourites in the DP collection, which should mean something), and they continued to keep a pretty high level in all the subsequent releases with Morse on guitar, whatever some so-called critics may have said at times. But now they have repeated it and sound wonderfully fresh and pungent. With McBride is a different kind of beast, for sure, but a beast nonethless.
In case there's still somebody over there who has not bought the album and listened to it, well, then you're wasting your life.
