Taken from the bands fourth studio album " Piece of Mind" released in May 1983.

Lyrics:

You'll take my life but I'll take yours too
You'll fire your musket but I'll run you through
So when you're waiting for the next attack
You'd better stand there's no turning back

The bugle sounds as the charge begins
But on this battlefield no one wins
The smell of acrid smoke and horses breath
As you plunge into a certain death

The horse he sweats with fear we break to run
The mighty roar of the Russian guns
And as we race towards human wall
The screams of pain as my comrades fall

We hurdle bodies that lay on the ground
And as the Russians fire another round
We get so near yet so far away
We won't live to fight another day

We get so close near enough to fight
When a Russian gets me in his sights
He pulls the trigger and I feel the blow
A burst of rounds takes my horse below

And as I lay there gazing at the sky
My body's numb and my throat is dry
And as I lay forgotten and alone
Without a tear I draw my parting groan.

This is the perfect metal song, it has everything you could want. I've met many people who've said they don't listen to metal but every single one loved The Trooper. I wish more modern metal bands adopted Iron Maiden's mentality. Simple, Catchy, Badass. Music should be about fun, not to show off how complicated you can make things.

I'm 33 and I've been listening to them since I was like 7. They are one of the bands that got me into metal. I will NEVER stop blasting Iron Maiden. 🤟🏻

Daughters account. I love how almost every song by iron Maiden tells a story and it's done so professionally that you can't not listen to it. At least for me anyway

When I first listened to this song I was like “Wait, is this a killer song about the Crimean War???” And it was. Bless lovely Iron Maiden. The band I would most like to drink scotch with in a library and talk about history.

All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred

What makes this song that much more badass [the riff itself makes me think about battle] is the fact that it was inspired by a Tennyson poem which was inspired by a light infantry charge against entrenched heavy Russian guns with overlapping fields of fire. The men (the troopers) would have known it was basically suicide, but they did it because it was their duty.

The poem itself is directly quoted and referenced in the film “Saving Private Ryan”.

See “Crimean War”, “Charge of The Light Brigade” and “Siege of Sevastopol”. Then you realize this is the same place that Russia is fighting right now [Ukraine] and that the battle this song is referring too took place in 1854 sort of, well, it’s crazy.

I saw Maiden in 1982 at the Dallas County Convention Center. Saxon and Fastway opened up for them. Great show and loudest concert I ever attended. 41 years later my ears are still ringing

You could hear so many cover bands trying to make it sound like Trooper they just don't have the lead and rhythm guitarist to play to get that sound..The Voice the bass player it's been over 40 years playing Trooper and it's still a true Badass Song...🎸🥁🎸🎤🎵🎼🎶🐎💨
