The masterplan to fix 'embarrassed' Haas F1 post-Steiner

New Haas F1 team principal Ayao Komatsu has a huge task on his hands.
Not only must he fill the shoes of larger-than-life predecessor Guenther Steiner, but he must also haul Haas off the bottom of the constructors’ championship – and fast.
Komatsu only found out he was taking over as team boss when owner Gene Haas gave him the good news at the end of last year. He says his priority is to give his team “the environment and framework so they can show their best”.
He’s revealed the first details of his masterplan for achieving that. And first on the agenda is to stress that he is absolutely not trying to be Guenther Steiner.

Komatsu as new principal: *hires Guenther
Gene: wait, that's illegal.

Properly communicating among members of large projects is a huge challenge even if they are located all in the same location/building. Having people spread out over 3 locations in vastly different time zones is insane. Going to be impossible without huge amounts of overhead in meetings, travels etc. no matter who is the boss.

One of my favorite recurring moments in F1 was when Steiner does phone calls "Hello Gene"

If Haas applied for F1 today they would not get in. Hitech had arguably a stronger bid and was not granted approval by the FIA. Gene was so lucky to get his team in just before the budget cap era.

Ayao Komatsu seems like a great guy. Hope he is successful.

Who the hell would voluntarily move to Banbury

I feel komatsu is similar to james vowles of williams. Both are extremely talented engineers first, team principals second. That sort of technical oversight and attention to detail has done great things for williams in a short space of time and could work for haas too.

No investment = no improvement

That’s a fact of life for F1

Gene Haas "Gunter get better or I'm pulling the plug" also Gene Haas "I'm not here to cash in and sell"

Haas cannot improve if they continue to use the infrastructure they are using now. They need to address the communication issues within their workforce which is stretched across 3 worksites in different timezones.
It's hard to say if sacking Gunther in place of Komatsu would improve the situation, but there is a point to be made that under Gunther's leadership Haas hasn't made a significant improvement in the standings since it started.

the only reason they are not selling now as opposed to in a year from now as they are trying to move up the constructors ladder a couple places to make the team more valuable.

My prediction for Haas is that nothing will change

Gene's overall plan in effect. Zero change.

Even if haas hasn’t been fulfilling its potential up to now, that potential isn’t as high as Gene thinks it is

Would be fun if Steiner got a new series like welcome to wrexham but in a different series in motor sports with netflix as a sponsor.

When you go through the details of the fall-out from the decision to not retain Steiner it sounds so much more sudden, unplanned and chaotic than has been presented so far.
🤞 Haas make it to testing with all their sponsors intact as we’ve seen F1 teams die this way before.

Komatsu has an impossible job. No further investment in the team from Gene and scapegoats found every season it seems.

Usually, almost person who wants to be the f1 engineer in japan would get a job at Honda. but he had gone to england after high school to study in local university alone and had met Takuma Sato at his F3 age, so that he had gotten the job at BAR HONDA. i guess Komatsu is a very talented person than many person thinks.

I will say, I was always surprised that Guenther was based in the US. Considering he's european and how much of his work entails being in Europe, you think he's spend more time there

I'm starting to wonder if the problem isn't at the top, Gene himself. There's been quite a few times he seems... disconnected to how F1 works. While he might be right in saying there's untapped potential with the current levels of investment, hence why he refuses to spend anymore. If he's not careful, all the OTHER teams that are doubling down with investments will make it quite difficult for Haas to keep up.
