NTA, but instead of giving the dog away without informing your lazy husband, you should have talked to him seriously about taking the responsibility of both dog and his kids by himself and be vigilant about it, and should have warned him of consequences otherwise, but yeah you did right, but now your husband needs a tight piece of mind to behave, specially be careful what he is saying to his kids

Knowing how her husband is I would have lied and said the dog ran away. She's married to a complete POS and I can't imagine living in home like that. It's hard enough with two small children and a new puppy without both parents helping out. Then he calls his own wife heartless and cold to his daughter? The dog wouldn't be the only thing I'm rehoming

You have a husband problem far more serious than the dog problem. Maybe rehome him too.

Depending what's the size is the dog and the high maintenance the dog is it's a massive responsibility. My sister used to have a Alaskan malamute and she trained him to be quite and how to be potty trained. Eventually she had to rehome him because she had my niece and my niece was allergic to dogs. I also have a big dog that's a Irish wolfhound and his name is Finnegan. He's well trained and he's very quite and not aggressive towards other animals. So before I've met my husband I told him I have a big dog and I'm responsible for him. I took him into my apartment he met Finnegan he looked so excited because I had his dream dog. Then I moved in with my husband's place and brought Finnegan and we went to met up with his parents. His parents loved Finnegan and since then he stays at his parents house Finnegan has a bigger space to roam around. So my husband's birthday I bought him 2 Irish wolfhound puppies he loves them. He does majority of the work but I take them to the vet and groomers.

She should have rehomed that bum of a husband and he could take the dog with him.

For rehomeing the dog, NTA. For the way she went about it, YATA. She says that if she had told her husband that she was going to rehome the dog, they would still have the dog.

Read that again. She wasn't going to talk to him about taking responsibility for the dog, just that she was going to rehome it.

That is not how you talk about a serious topic. If she did talk to him and he resisted changing his ways, then she rehomed the dog after it would be a definitive NTA across the board.

They both acted like pitable teenagers rather than responsible adults. His initial and worsening inaction and her eventual reaction both show that they aren't a good match since he won't communicate out of laziness and she won't communicate out of resentment.

What value is that "man" even adding to you and your children's lives?

eh no matter the context he can sue u. u openly admitted to giving away "his" not "our" dog without him knowing. lawyers will eat u up for how u made this post. not only will u have to try to find the dog and return it, but ull pay both urs and his court fees, and pay damages.
animals like dogs and cats fall under the emotional support suits too
