New Release Reviews: Ozzy Osbourne & Dire Straits

Today I'm reviewing the recent Ozzy Osbourne 30th Anniversary reissue of No More Tears and the final Dire Straits album, On Every Street, the 2021 "Start Your Ear Off Right" Rhino Reissue. Both double LP releases have been somewhat controversial in the Hoffman forums and elsewhere with complaints of off-center and noisy pressings. My findings suggest the opposite with more details within. Thanks!

On Every Street has been passed off by most of the critics as a 'flop' album. It is one of my favorite albums EVER. Every song is excellent. Ones that stand out for me are 'Calling Elvis' (best tribute to the king of rock n' roll), 'The Bug', 'Fade To Black' & 'How Long'. Mark Knopfler's lyrical humor, guitar playing, shuffle between rock, country & jazz make me want to listen to this great record over & over again!

I’ve always loved On Every Street, I think it’s an extremely underrated album. I remember watching Dire Straits perform live in 1990 and MK said they were gonna do another album. They performed “I think I love you too much” which never made it onto the final album - and was instead recorded by Jeff Healy on his ‘Hell to Pay’ album - also a cool version. The Dire Straits version is available on the “Knebworth” double album and has MK and Eric Clapton trading guitar solos - incredible stuff and well worth checking out. The rest of that album is also great. I always wet clean every record I buy - including new records. This is a great way to remove any static (normally caused by those awful inner sleeves!). Great video thanks I’ll need to get that Ozzy album! 😎

I have a great pressing of On Every Street on 180gm, mastered from analogue and digital masters by Grundman and Ludwig and lacquers cut by Bellman and Grundman. My favourite on it is Iron Hand, which is a test track i use use when auditioning speakers.

I believe On Every Street was the only Dire Straits studio album Mofi didn’t press. Too bad. All of the other 45 rpm Mofi versions are incredible sounding.

On Every Street is a great album and highly under-appreciated by the "critics" in my book, and my pressing sounds nice and clean, I guess I got a good one.

Keep ‘em coming, Tim. I’m not the biggest Ozzie fan out there, but I picked up the CD of No More Tears when I heard the title track. A very strong album and with Ryan K. Smith mastering I’ll definitely be picking this one up. Loved On Every Street from the very first time I heard it-I have the vinyl reissue as well, my copy is a quiet player and of course Chris Bellman is still batting 1000. I suspect that after all the arena rock success of Brothers in Arms the critics en masse decided it was time to take them down a peg or two, but regardless, I love it unashamedly and there are no bad Dire Straits records (or Mark Knopfler solo albums for that matter) IMO. Mary Chapin-Carpenter has a nice cover of the Bug that is worth hearing.

I got to see Ozzy on that tour, Ugly Kid Joe and Slaughter were the openers. Thanks for another great show.

I wonder how the Chris Bellman master on the reissue compares to the OG Bob Ludwig master? I’m guessing this album was also recorded digitally (like Brothers in Arms) so an OG CD might be just as good in this case

Hello Tim,
I just bought another Brothers in Arms album after finding a near mint RL pressing in shrink with the hype sticker on less. The newest one is a hal speed remastering from Abbey Road Studios released earlier this year. According to discogs its is limited to just 400. Should have it today. Have you by any chance heard anything regarding this release? The fellow that remastered it is named Miles Showell. Have you ever heard of him?
Have a great weekend. Happy Thanksgiving!

i liked on every street but clearly the end was near for the band - fade to black is a great blues but his solo was beckoning - nice epitaph

Thanks for the reviews. I was hesitant to pick up the On Every Street. Will get it now.

Do you know if Ryan mastered the box set also?

Randy Rhodes is top 3 guitarist ever. Looping Zach in that stratosphere is a bit of a stretch!!!! Great guitarist though!!! Ozzy’s first 2 albums on another level!!! Mostly because of Randy!!!!
