In 2008, Hurricane Ike took the Houston area by storm, leaving 2.15 million people without power, or 95 percent of the all CenterPoint Energy customers. The experience led Seamus "Shay" Curran, a professor of physics at the University of Houston and director of UH's Institute for NanoEnergy, to create "Storm Cell" -- an off-grid, portable solar generator that produces two-to-five kilowatts of energy, enough to power a home during an outage, without the emissions of its diesel counterpart.

My 4yr old built the same thing. No college needed.

Exactly what technology was taken 'from the lab' to make this? This could be done with simple off-the-shelf components pieced together and put it on wheels.
