You’ll see real numbers from my first web development job. You'll also see the actual check too! RealToughCandy is your home for real-world web development and this video confirms it!

Ever wonder what a web developer salary is? Or how much junior developers might expect to make outside Silicon Valley and outside major cities like NYC, Chicago etc? In this video you'll see it firsthand.

I'm RealToughCandy, aka RTC aka Candy -- you can call me anything but late for dinner. I'm a self-taught web developer who learned web development using books, Udemy courses, Meetups and other low-cost resources. It wasn't always the smoothest journey but the key is that I kept, and continue to keep pushing. A developer is always learning no matter how many years they have in the industry.

My mission is to make you a better developer by providing real-world web development education, information and just a little smidge of entertainment.

Stigma against talking about salary is a tactic to underpay employees as far as I'm concerned.

I did a coding bootcamp in Dallas. Got a job a month later for $18/hr. After 2 months I got a job in NC for $70k/yr. After a year I went looking for another job and was offered $90k/yr but my job counter offered at $110k/yr so I stayed.

Congrats! I started at $15/hr and was just happy to get my foot in the door. Once you get some experience you can start making a lot lot more.

Y'all I make that taking care of 26 patients as a nurse in North Carolina in a long term care facility. I literally am responsible for people's lives and that is all I get. That is why I am coding and switching careers. Thanks for the info, girl!

45k isn't bad for a start, depending on where you live. I think this video is a good reference for a lot of new developers because there are some companies that will low ball you and say it's because you're new to the industry. I once got offered a whopping 25k and a year's worth of bus passes by a small start-up that made 10 million a year.

35k?? What the heck? I make that as a warehouse worker in California 😅 glad you negotiated that

Thanks for sharing this story. I don't hear as many developers discussing the reality that a lot of code roles have you dealing with old technology. Also, I am glad you talked about salary. We all would love 60k and up but when you are just starting out (and are not in a big tech location), lower salaries are nothing to be ashamed of and scoff at until you get experience

My first salary as a developer was 60K but that was in Dallas, it rose quickly from there, but I had to hop companies for the raises.

I was at a conference where we wrote our job and salary (anonymously) onto post-its and stuck them on the wall... that was an interesting exercise.
I'm now currently at a company that has complete salary transparency for everyone in the company including founders- it's quite refreshing to be at a company that's so open :)

After 42 years in IT I'm still surprised how often I use basic software development skills such as bash script development to automate linux system administration tasks that other team members are not comfortable developing. The skills you learn Today can very beneficial financially for the next twenty to thirty years.

ok so, here is my issue with this video. Even though you keep repeating that "YOU" felt that you were paid fairly, your tone seems to suggest that you are NOT happy. that paycheck of $1532.34 * 26 paychecks is 39840.84 a year which means you took home 88.53% of your paycheck. That is awesome! so for those on here who think that you got the shaft, well they're wrong. You did state that geographically that wouldn't suffice on the West Coast. This is the 1st video I've seen and I like what i saw, pay wise. My only suggestion would be that you emphasis your contentment with the situation more, unless you do live in a high cost of living locale.

My first salary as a junior dev in 2005 was $28, 000. When I left the company 3 years later I was at $38, 000. I was bringing home about $1, 100 twice a month. I was still at home with mom so it was alot of money
