Is this popular Scottish tourist town overhyped? It might not be fair to ask if Pitlochry is overhyped because we definitely understand why it's always busy!

Hey, we haven’t been there yet. It was great to see it from your point of view. All the best Chelsea and Mike

I'm like you guys, knew it was famous for the theatre but absolutely no idea why. Never actually been to Pitlochry but always associated it with coach party tourism.

Looks like a very pretty place. I ve passed through it more often than I' ve stopped, as I often go to Inverness and further North by Citylink coach or train.. Stirling also gets called Gateway to the Highlands' and I think Perth is too. There's a few of them, it' s good marketing😂.

I live near to Stirling and also Culross, and overtourism is becoming a problem in these places too. I avoid them if possible for much of the year.

I remember we got taken to the fish lift in the way back from a school trip to Aviemore

Had lunch at the Wee Choo Choo on the way back home last month! Great Thai chicken curry there! The town was full of tourists, and wasn't there long enough to see it properly.

These days, I keep going up or down the A9 and give Pitlochry a miss. However, living in Edinburgh, I visited Pitlochry several times between about 1970 and 2010. The route you walked was one I have done a couple of times, but I have been there when you could see the salmon leaping up the ladder, which is quite spectacular. How they know to keep going up the ladder from one 'bucket' to the next is difficult to imagine. The main street is packed in the summer and I reckon the majority of people are just passing through, getting out of their cars to stretch their legs and having a look in the shops. Personally, I wouldn't buy anything unless it was food to tide me over or, possibly, walking gear if there is a sale going on. Pitlochry is very small (3, 000 inhabitants) but is the largest settlement between Perth and Aviemore; hence the number of visitors. Nevertheless I have been amazed how few visitors take the short walk to the dam / power station / salmon ladder. Is it overhyped? I don't reckon it is hyped particularly - no more than nearby Dunkeld, which is also small and overrun in the summer. So I suppose my answer is that it is not really overhyped.

Helensburgh is also known as gateway to the highlands.

I`ve been a few times and enjoyed it every time. I don`t know who is doing the hyping to which the author refers.

Its a mecca for retired English people who want to buy a comparatively 'cheap' property to enjoy a better retirement than they would otherwise have in the south.

They really don't like you parking there do they? Double yellow lines and cones every few yards.
