Hey Barry, my husband was inspired with the idea of steaming Xmas pudding in a slow cooker, so yesterday he put a shop bought one in the slow cooker in the morning. For 25 years we've always microwaved them but whilst they tasted nice they always felt stodgy, chewy and gummy and would sink like a lead weight into our stomachs. Slow cooking it however resulted in a soft, airy, cakey pudding which made the experience so much more amazing that we've agreed we'll never microwave Xmas pudding ever again.

I love the blindfolded test by Mrs. Barry. IMO she gave ber honest review. Sometimes there were bias because of the looks or the cooking method/time ☺️

This was lovely and nostalgic for me, I used to make Christmas puddings with my late mum. A little tip - include a fold/pleat in the foil that you put on top, to allow for expansion

It's still surprising who prefers what in the end. I thought Barry might have preferred the one with the least taste of brandy, but then again there are many other flavors in play as well. Didn't expect Mrs. B to go for the microwave one, lol. Fun video, have a nice Christmas!

The step you miss is storing it for a year after you've made it. Each year you eat last year's and store the one you made for the following year

I love the fact you only have one bowl that size. I microwaved my homemade pudding but I may slow cook next year.

I actually never knew there was vegetable suet available! I'll have to keep an eye out for that next time I'm baking.

I know this is probably pretty simple and just a default part of your life, but I am so glad that you take the time to make sure that the fun and yummy stuff you make for the channel is accessible to Phoebe when you can, and you point out the ways you do that. I'm not vegetarian by any means, but I am diligent about learning and trying ways to cook that are accessible to my vegetarian and vegan friends, and at least around here I know that's a rarity - either people disregard their dietary needs in general or do the bare minimum (like "oh, there's a side or two that they can eat, so that's enough"). I love hearing your suggestions to make foods vegetarian friendly, and hope other people are able to put those ideas in their back pocket for cooking for themselves and their loved ones.

Miss my grandmother's Christmas pudding, she always made it about a month before and was done the old way in the special pan and gently boiled for hours. Have never tried to make it, but might give it a try.

Being from Ireland my mother used to put a pint of stout instead of brandy, they both look good

Awesome, finally get a blindfold taste test. Thanks Barry! I think this is what we were asking for. If she had known from the beginning, I wonder if she would've "liked" the slow cooker one just because it was supposed to be the better one. Not on purpose, just subconsciously. Feel like that's why the blindfold is key 😁👍

Interesting concept this series, I like it. Thinking about the meals I make that feel like they're better when they cook for longer, chili con carne, chicken curry and lentil and bacon soup (well basically all soups) all taste better with a longer cook, so it'd be interesting to see if you can find a way to do them quickly whilst still generating that depth of flavour.

I soak my fruit for 2 weeks, topping up the rum every other day. The cake is delicious.

I adore Christmas pudding! My mum and I make one every year and follow a traditional Delia Smith recipe. It’s one of my favourite things about Christmastime.

I loved when Mrs B mentioned it not having sauce or custard. My favourite part of the Christmas pudding is the hard sauce.
