Santa Fe 3751 passes through San Clemente on 5/1/2010 on its way to San Diego. I estimate she was going her limited speed of 40mph through Metrolink stations, and then no doubt she opened up the throttle when she was clear.

This video was shot with my Canon 5D Mark II. As a technical note this video really shows off the horrible moire pattern problem that these DSLRs exhibit with video.

I love how everyone seems to stop as if time is frozen for a moment when a steam engine goes by. That awe-inspiring power and rumble (and whistle) seems to have just about everyone looking on in wonder. I love it!

My wife just asked me why I've been on a steam locomotive video kick the past few days, and I said very flatly "Because I want the choo-choo trains to come back, dammit!"

That’s why I like going to the beach at San Clemente the trains I can be on the surf and see some action

Man, I wish I was into trains then as much as I am now. Being born and raised in San Diego, I'm so bummed I missed this opportunity.

That’s a fantastic station especially with the beach next to the track

it so annoying when people on the beach don't even turn around when something as awesome and as great as a full functional steam engine.

Wow crazy how it’s just right there on the busy public beach next to where everyone is walking. That’s some good railfan ing territory right there.

I would’ve enjoy seeing this in person!

Nice video! One correction, though: San Clemente is actually a Metrolink station, not Amtrak. If you saw that crossing South of you, I was the railfan there with two cameras and tripods.

@Sanddesert Look at the cars as they go by. You need to watch it in HD to see it. The pattern shows up in the steel of the passenger cars.

Idiots on the beach don't even turn around to watch it.
