I statements seldom work with some people. I had several conversations with my suspended Wife about money where I used I statements ALL THE TIME -I NEVER blamed her-, but she ALWAYS took offense.

Or, hear me out....as a couple if you are at the point of living together, make it where you have 3 accounts. 1 only yours, 1 only theirs and the 3rd the households that has both your names on it. Set it to Automatically take 30-50% of each person's paycheck/income (depending on employed, or self employed) to be taken out and put in the shared household income. That shared household account is not to be touched unless it's for bills, mortgage ect. But what ever is left over and in individual accounts, that money is spent on what ever that person who's account the name is in wants to spend it on. No questions asked. Household account taken care of first obviously. Then you both know that the needs are taken care of first. Equally. Anything after that, no stress, no fighting.
