Ed Wood - Authenticity in Cinematography

The story of Ed Wood is incredible, but so is the cinematography in Ed Wood, Tim Burton, and Stefan Czapsky managed to craft an authentic feeling atmosphere through inspiration from other 50s films. And in doing so, they made a film that feels like we are taken back to the 50s, well, with Johnny Depp.

In today's video, I’ll be looking at how they crafted the look, what Burton and Czapsky did to create the lighting style, as well as the equipment they used to capture everything.

As always if you have a recommendation for an analysis, let me know below!

Timeline:
00:00 Introduction
00:37 The Look
03:26 Lighting
05:49 Equipment
07:12 Conclusion

Music:
Fur Elise - Beethoven
Web Weaver's Dance - Asher Fulero
Ceremonial Prelude - Sir Cubworth
Sarabande - Joel Cummins
Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairies - Tchaikovsky

I think part of what I find attractive about Gordon Willis’ work is how he does lighting like this but in color, and the way he uses color on top of lighting like this is just glorious lol

I believe they used what were known as Venetian blinds for the lighting effect simulating light through windows and against the walls. I don't know if that's what you were looking for. Great analysis by the way.

People really underestimate Tim Burton's range- even this video which is celebrating it!
