Virtual reality (VR) can be so much more than just fun and entertainment. It's a powerful tool to create empathy within people and explain complex situations like climate issues. Watch Maria Herholdt Engermann’s talk from TEDxAarhus 2019, where she talks about her experience making the VR experience X-Ray Fashion, and how she discovered that VR can be used as a powerful tool to create empathy within people, and potentially change consumer habits regarding fast fashion.
Maria Herholdt Engermann has a background in filmmaking and has specialized in VR storytelling. She is now owner of her own VR company, MANND, based in Aarhus. The company creates VR experiences for both business and art projects – and strives to create the next generation of media entertainment.
“I’m a huge VR fan. I see great potential with this immersive medium. We saw how implementing physical effects within VR can create a deeper feeling of presence and a long term impact for the audience.”

Where do I find the movie?

What about all the people out there with their own VR headsets? If you want to spread the word, release the movie! You can't reach a lot of people by showing it only in some museums and events.

Fantastic! It's a brilliant idea to makes us feel what another person feels. Certainly, an excellent way to put us on another person's shoes.
My best wishes from Brazil

Imagine this seamless transition between the parts of the installation utilising characters who make you follow them or move in a different direction. Maybe even abstract voices or lights guiding you. You could then make seamless transitions inside the simulation aswell. Watch the prologue of Jedi fallen order and see how theymade the dream sequence of the protagonist inside the train which transitions into an imperial base. Imagine turning around as the main idea, metaphorically showing what you turn your back to, often unwillingly, because you can't know what's there. And at some point a corporate member or other parts of modern society insisting on looking towards the catwalk in front of you and not the poor people sewing behind you.

What a great idea, virtual reality as a way for people to empathise with other people's experiences in their own environment! I would love one of those VR devices! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Would be great if politicians CEOs of corporations were encouraged to participate in these VR activities to help them to understand & empathise with the workers in these sweat shops often employed by these big corporations.

Human suffering, so you can impress people who will never let you be the TRUE you. Time to get rid of our egos, or they will get rid of us.

I lack empathy in the real world so I doubt VR would make any difference.

I know fast fashion is no't good and ppl could think ways to stop doing too much clothes that are going into waste, but if they stop those work places what I think gives them much more places to work, where would those ppl go to work then? They should help the workers make they more comfrotable to work and think that fast fashion issue.
