“All Yesterdays” Explained | Speculative Zoology | PT 2

We know a great deal about life of the past. A whole lot more than we should, considering how fragmented, shifted, and cracked the fossil record is. With what we know, we know we’re getting a lot of things correct. There’re ways to validate and confirm certain aspects of biology of past organisms; however, there are some aspects that are known unknowns or unknown unknowns, stuff we know we don’t know vs. stuff we don’t even know we don’t know. What if everything we know about life of the past and how that life looked and acted is part of that unknown category? Let’s take a trip through the pages of a book that asks that very question.

3:00 "roars" are usually for intraspecies confrontation to intimidate their rival, or announce the area as their territory to more distant rivals

All Yesterdays is amazing. It's a wonderful book and it's easy to see its influence over modern paleo art.

I would love to see a video on Dinosaur intelligence. I read recently that Tyrannosaurus was quite intelligent.

The Microraptor one has always been my favorite! I can just picture them singing/chirping as they flit through the forest, with David Attenborough narrating in the background.

the thought of camouflaging to the extent where they appear as a part of nature is just so awesome. I would have never thought of dinosaurs being able to do that, but now that i know about it and have seen how it works, i just feel dumb for not ever thinking about that. wow.

but in most cases when theyre depicted roaring in movies they arent technically hunting, its more of a purely territorial display.
something many animals do even, today no matter how large or small.
a fascinating but slightly offtopic video is one questioning if big/small wildcats love laser pointers like house cats.
the results are hilarious and a little surprising lol.

I love All Yesterday's, really wish I'd actually read the book instead of just looking for the drawings and paintings online.

Actually, the goats in Morocco are in Argon trees. They're a crucial part of acquiring Argon oil.

The mystery of the 4 winged microraptor is, as always, the result of human shortsightedness. Back when it was first discovered many scientists just couldn't wrap mind around it. Humans, as grounded animals, have completely neglected to take into account the evolution of the birds' feet, not realizing that to evolve flight a species must also evolve how to land (unsurprising seeing as how people usually gloss over the most unglamorous parts of an airplane: its landing gear).
It seems so obvious now, but the reason for those 4 wings was because the microraptor was making the behavioral leap to birds. How to take off, how to land, how to catch prey: those leg wings served as their proverbial training wheels until they evolved the necessary breast muscles for true flight.

This opened my eyes to so much Meme centered Dinosaur speculations.
Someone should really make a bunch of Dinosaur drawings but with funny animal traits so we could just like make Velociraptors into Axolotls
