Study calls St. Louis 'least safe' city in the U.S.

Once again St. Louis is at the top of an unfortunate list as the country's most dangerous city.

A recent study by WalletHub says St. Louis is the least safe community in America, and according to their report, it’s not particularly close.

“We know the region as a whole is very safe,” said St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones.

Jones may have a point about the greater St. Louis region, but according to WalletHub, her city is the least safe city in the country.

“I don’t get my news from a place that does credit bureau reporting,” said Jones.

“It’s certainly distressing that moniker is put on the city of St. Louis,” said Director of Public Safety Dan Isom.

I live and work in the city, at night you can drive around for an hour and not see a cop even in downtown, you know you bad in a situation when 911 doesn’t answer your call.

I know the mayor’s rival was found dead in Live after the mayor’s birthday party. That’s a hell of a gift, for a hell of mayor. But no, no. StL is not skidding toward hell. No

Saint Louis is stuck in their ways. The Mayor hasn't done anything for us but look pretty in pictures! The job market even with a degree has favoritism based on race. St louis will never change! Trust me. Been here for years and it's still an unfriendly place

Crazy memories of years ago and Mike Bush saying “St Louis is the nicest big city” - once upon a time (30+ years ago)

St Louis was once a great city to grow up in. It’s gone down significantly when the good paying factory jobs left. Now it’s just a pit where dreams go to die.

They needed to do a study?
My sis and her hubby came in from Jacksonville
And were taken aback when we schooled them on how to keep their heads on a swivel
Where are you going? How are you gonna park?
How far do you have to walk?
We don't say, "see you later"
we say, "Be safe, text us when you get there"
When I'm out and about, i text my sis in Jacksonville my whereabouts just in case i disappear
We have unconscious scheduled check INS
If we don't hear from each other at by certain times if the day we start reaching out
And it's not paranoia
It's not over reacting
It is dangerous here. Bullets and speeding and car thefts and robbery
The damn gig drivers aren't even safe
PET thefts
Black girls and women going missing
He'll Berkeley had a human trafficker who ran a gas station and the gas station is still operational
AND little girl's have gone MISSING walking past that gas station to the bus stop
St Louis is NOT safe

I'm 65 years old I've lived in St Louis my entire life North Saint Louis in the 60s and then South Saint Louis in the 70s. St Louis was always violent and cruel. As a kid I couldn't even walk to school without getting a brick busted upside my head. Nowadays I'm retired and I live downtown and there's nothing but shootings down here. If I could go back in time I would have got the hell out of here a long time ago. I felt safer walking the streets of Chicago which I've done on quite a few occasions. This city has to be the garbage pit of the nation. If those poles came out with positive information the mayor would be saying how great and accurate they are. We even have a nothing worthless prosecutor so what do you expect.

Jones needs to own the fact that we are the most dangerous city in America, she should be shouting it from the roof top and using that to help merge the city and county so funding and police are stabilized in all areas

All these officials are doing are trying to shift the focus to the greater STL area, when the greater STL area wasn't the focus of the study, I imagine, but rather the small jurisdiction of St. Louis City. Sure the region as a whole likely isn't the most dangerous, but the city core certainly has some work to do. People that I know that have lived downtown say they used to hear gunshots around their apartments almost nightly. If that isn't dangerous enough for you to get out of Dodge, I don't know what is...

If Saint Louis wants to earn a higher spot on this list and in the hearts of Americans, they certainly need to try and annex parts of the county, with the remaining portions of Saint Louis County potentially being annexed by Jefferson County if not by the city.

I did a quick Google spree and found a land area calculator. If STL City annexes up to the Missouri/Mississippi Confluence, following the Missouri up to about Ballwin Area, then shooting straight down to the Meramec River and following that all the way back to the Mississippi, STL City would have a land area of roughly 420 square miles, making it around the 15th largest city by land area, much more comparable to other city jurisdictions in the Midwest of similar populations such as Kansas City, Nashville and Indianapolis. City territory would be expanded eightfold. My best guess is the total population would be around a solid million/million and a half, something around there, if the total metro area is around 3 million.

A more adequately appropriated tax flow for the larger city would allow it to address some of the STL Area's main issues with highly improved versatility. The words of the mostly Democratic government of the city will be put to the test as the most impoverished areas in our community will now be actually under their control. Infrastructure projects across the area will be completed in a more cohesive manner. The city will also have election results more appropriate to that of the overall demographic of the surrounding community outside of that central city core.

I obviously don't know anything about the feasibility of this actually happening, but I see no downsides! Please let me know if y'all disagree or have anything to add, I just love discussing idealistic things like how we could optimize our communities by more appropriately defining community borders.

Have you ever seen a politician whom is responsible for a decline of their electorate to a point where it tops a list like this not try to deny or mitigate it?

They have to because, admitting* it is admitting they're doing a terrible job. I love that her mitigation was to point out the further away from her sphere of influence & policies one goes, the lower the crime rate gets.

This law enforcement experiment isn't working, but the mayor is pushing forward with it anyway. Because when you run on ideology, live in a fantasy world and are in way over your head at your job, that's what you do I guess.

Next time instead of electing an ideological figure head, vote for someone actually competent without considering the colour of their skin.

P.S. I wonder how that law suit against Hyundai is going 🤣

We have the same things in Chicago and across the entire city, not just select parts. We have a lightfoot that is as useless as mammary glands on a male cow; ruining the show not running it!

St Louis City needs to join St Louis County (like most cities in this country do) & increase its boarders bcuz the studies only account for such a small portion of the whole Greater St Louis area that it's a joke. Yes there are bad places in the city but there are also places in the city where you can leave your door unlocked & not have to worry. & our city is so funny & segregated that these two different ways of living may only be separated by a few blocks. Even downtown is not as bad as folks make it out to be & I work downtown everyday. Just be aware of your surroundings & don't talk to strangers, a lesson we should have all learned as children🤷🏾‍♂️
