Burning Methane on Frozen Lakes

Показать описание
This is a frozen lake, if we break the ice on top, the lake can release flammable gas.
However, not all lakes exhibit this phenomenon.
First, you need to find a lake with white clumps and frozen ice. These white clumps are actually methane gas bubbles trapped in the ice.
Bacteria from decomposing plant matter at the bottom of the frozen lake release methane as they break down, creating methane bubbles in the water.
And, High organic sediment at the lake bottom increases the production of methane, resulting in more frequent and larger trapped bubbles.

The second guy almost gave himself a free Phineas gauge.

First I’ve heard of this, but I’ve never lived in snow country. I’m almost 71, you can learn something new every day.

The scary part isn't when they burn, it's when they don't, and there's just an invisible death cloud.

We had a pretty big earthquake around like 4-6 years ago and it like opened up a natural gas pocket in big lake and created a whole in the ice for that winter and swallowed like 3 snowmobiles and 2 trucks and it still bubbles gas to the top

Imagine cooking ontop of that while fishing and camping next to it

Just be careful since these are likely to be in ponds and lakes with a lot of decomposing plant matter, which raises the temperature of the water around it, which could cause the ice to be thinner, especially in shallow areas, where cattails or bulrushes may be present.

When you’re life is so boring that you have nothing better to do that go on a frozen lake to light off gas bubbles.

I used to do this in the summer. Fill a jar with water and invert in a shallow area of a lake or pond with lots of organics on the bottom. Stir up the muck, and the rising methane bubbles will displace the water in the jar. Take the jar out of the water and light the gas. Woof! Kids used to love it.

Actually better to light Methane than just to vent it, better for the Environment cause Methane has higher co2 equivilant greenhoude effects than co2 itself

We have these at Abraham Lake in Alberta, been there a bunch of times and I always forget to do this. Too busy ice fishing... plus it's always got million mile an hour winds there, so usually am in a fishing tent, and lighting that in a tent is a very bad idea

So we can harvest gas in survivial games now? If not we should

If you make a really tiny hole and light that you can cook on it

Burning the methane is actually environmentally friendly.

I wonder if it would be possible to get a flame going long enough to cook on
