In 2003, the Dubai government embarked on one of the most insane megaprojects imaginable - create man-made islands in the ocean, shaped of the world's countries. It was supposed to be a short boat ride from Dubai, but today, more than 20 years after construction began, more than 90% of the man-made islands sit completed abandoned.

This is, The Catastrophic Failure of Dubai’s Man-Made Islands.

I went to Dubai in 2021, I was in a taxi and was talking to the taxi driver about the world islands. He said that they were doomed from the start and were slowly sinking.

This reminds of when you start a big greedy project in Minecraft but then quit just 30 minutes later

This whole island project just reeks of stupidity. People with a ton of wealth and power and no one around them to tell them, "No. Don't be an idiot."

I always figured that the islands were a bad idea, and now it's quite clear that they were. They've caused drastic damage to the marine life & biodiversity, and it's all for nothing. Especially seeing as some of the islands are literally eroding - causing even more damage to marine life. It's honestly sad.

Kuwait did something different than other gulf countries which seemed to work: Instead of making lands outwards it dug inwards and created manmade peninsulas

What hits me the hardest is the vast amount of wasted resources that could have been used for so many better purposes.

Don't forget that they can truck their sewage or dump it in the ocean. When I visited there around 2005, you couldn't get within 50 yards of the ocean, let alone go into it. The stench was unbelievable.

You know what my $7 million house needs while surrounded 360 degrees by the ocean? A swimming pool.

As a little kid moving to the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai during 2008, we lived on a permanent construction site as the frond we lived on, Frond G was never finished. So it was just a weird experience as a kid watching everything around you never be finished, walking on the beach and stepping over pieces of rebar poking out of the sand

People with too much money, immense egos, and terrible ideas are always a wonderful combination.

Anyone who played as a child at the beach at some point probably tried making a sand castle or sand fort near the shoreline only to then see it eroded by the waves in all kinds of ways once the tide started to come in. How can a people who live with so much sand not understand what a bad idea it is using it as a foundation in water? It's totally nuts.

These places look so soulless, I can't understand why anybody would want to live there

u missed 2 important observations:
1) Dubai heat most of the year is unbearable.
2) The water within the man-made islands started to smell so badly, which makes living there even unbearable🤷‍♀️

Moral of the story: Don't dump a bunch of sand into the ocean and try to sell it

The ocean has a long history of being undefeated in eroding actual islands, let alone man made sand bars.

I've been to Dubai as a tourist and the only man-made island I've been is Palm Jumeriah just because of the waterpark called Atlantis Aquaventure. I never knew about the other islands being a total failure
