THE CHRISTIAN AND THE BIBLE TEXTS JOSH. 1:7-8, PS. 1:1-3, 119:105, LUKE 16:17
INTRODUCTION
The Bible is the word of God given to all men. It is the manual of life with which we are all expected to walk through life successfully. There is therefore a relationship between man and the word of God. For us therefore to get the best out of this relationship, we must understand the bible through consistent and committed study, Deut. 29:29. Without adequate knowledge of the Bible, life becomes a struggle, and failure is inevitable Hos. 4:6, Is. 5:13.
WHY MUST WE STUDY THE BIBLE?
1. It is the REVELATION OF GOD: The Bible is not the idea or ideals of men. Holy men were inspired to write by the leading of God's spirit. 2 Pet. 1:21, Deut. 29:29, 1 Pet. 1:8-12. It is only through the Bible that you know the character and attributes of God. From the Bible you will know God e.g. His compassion, mercy, love, grace and peace. Ps. 19, Phil. 3:1-16. Everything else will change; everything else will fail but the Word Is. 40:6-8, Luke 16:17. It is the only thing that will stand the test of time Mal. 3:6.
2. It is the ROUTE TO SPIRITUAL GROWTH: Growth is desirable, and anything that is not growing will soon die. The Word of God enables our growth in the character and attributes of God. It is the seed of life. Luke 8:11, 1 Pet. 2:2, Is. 28:9-10, 2 Tim. 4:9-13, Heb. 5:12, 6:1-3, 2 Pet. 3:17-18. Faith which is the key to pleasing God (Heb. 11:6) will only come through the Word of God (Rom. 10:17, 2Thess, 1:3).
3. It is the SOURCE OF SPIRITUAL EQUIPMENT: Christianity is a race and we need to be adequately equipped to be able to succeed. 2 Tim. 2:15, Luke 4:16-22, Is. 48:17-18 Prayers, Fasting, all works of faith must be based on the word of God. Do not forget it is the source. James 4:3, Matt. 22:29.
4. THE BIBLE IS THE SOURCE OF LIFE. The Word of God was spoken
in the beginning and all things came into existence. The same word is what we have written in the Bible Gen. 1:1-3, John 1:1-4, Heb. 1:1-3, John 6:63-68. In believing the word we have life John 20:31. We are saved eternally through the Word I Pet. 1:23. It cuts across class, race, cultures, OTHER REASONS backgrounds and occupations.
(a) The Bible reveals the purpose of God for man Ps. 49:20, Gen. 1:26 (b). It gives us answers for the condition of our day I Tim. 4:1-2, Jer. 9:1 3 29, John 10:10.
(c) The Bible is AUTHORITATIVE. It is God speaking to man Ps. 138:2. John 17:17, 8:32, 2 Tim. 3:16-17, 2 Pet. 1:16-19. The word of God is infallible; you can bet your life on it. It has not failed and shall not fail. Ps. 119:89.
(d) It meets all the spiritual needs of man. I Thess. 1:5, Ps. 1:1-3, Ps. 128; 19:7-11.
(e) It is INEXHAUSTIBLE IN ITS TRUTHS. So it must be read and re-read I Tim. 4:13
(f) It reveals God's plan of redemption. It shows us exactly how we are, hopeless in our sin, Rom. 3:23. It tells man exactly how he can come into the presence of God; Acts 4:12, John 10:9, 14:6, Rom. 5:7-9
(g) It offers guidelines for life. Ps. 119:105, 9, II John 15:3.
(h) It is the only book that gives us confidence to face the future John 4:1-3, Col. 1:27, Rom. 5:1-5, 2 Cor. 4:7-12, Rom. 8:31-39.
THE CHRISTIAN AND THE DEVIL
We live in a world where the devil is active and where he is also god. 2 Cor. 4:4, 1 Pet. 5:8, Rev. 11:15. We need effective weapons to overcome him because he is constantly engaging believers in warfare. 2 Cor. 10:3-6, Eph. 6:10-18. The word of God alone is the only effective weapon against the devil, we must know what is written and what is written again. Ps. 119:11, Luke 4:1-15, I John 3:8. An ill-equipped Christian will become a foot mat for the devil. All things are upheld by the Word of God. Heb. 1:3. For us all therefore to overcome the wiles of the enemy we must be soaked in the word of God.
