How do plants reproduce?:
Plants can reproduce in many ways. Most of the plants that we see around us reproduce through seeds. Some plants can reproduce from body parts such as roots, leaves and stems.
Ferns and mosses reproduce from tiny seed-like structures called spores.
Reproduction from the stem:
You may have seen new shoots emerging from your potatoes or ginger stored in your kitchen. Potato and ginger are underground stems. Can these grow into new plants?
Take a potato and observe it carefully. You will find that it has several small buds on it. We call them 'eyes', new plants grow from these buds. The ginger plant grows from these buds. The onion is a bulb(an underground stem with fleshy leaves). New plants grow from onion bulbs.
Sometimes, farmers and gardeners grow new plants from pieces of stem. These pieces have on or two buds on them and are called stem cuttings. Rose, hibiscus, Bougainvillea, sugarcane and crotons can be grown from stem cuttings.
Strawberry plants have long stems that run along the ground. These are called runners. New plants grow from the runners.
Reproduction from leaves:
The _bryophyllum plant has thick and fleshy leaves. The leaves have buds along the edges. New plants grow from these buds. When the leaves drop down to the ground, the buds grow into adult plants.
Reproduction from roots:
The roots of some plants such as sweet potato and carrot produce new plants. Support a sweet potato in a jam bottle full of water, using toothpicks. Note how many days it takes for the plant to grow.
Reproduction from seeds:
Most plants grow from seeds. Seeds are usually found inside fruits, they are different shapes and sizes. New plants grow when these seeds fall on the soil and germinate.
The structure of a seed:,
Take a few seeds of bean or channa they are hard and dry. And cannot be broken easily, soak these seeds in water and leave them overnight. Take a soaked seed and look at it carefully, is it softer and swollen up? Why? The seed absorbs water and swells up.
A thick outer covering called the seed coat protects all seeds, on one side of the seed is a scar. This is where the seed was attached to the fruit. Near the scar is a small hole. This hole allows water to enter and makes the seed swell up.
Carefully remove the seed coat. This seed has two seed leaves called cotyledons. Between the cotyledons is the baby plant, called the embryo. The embryo contains a baby shoot and a baby root. The seed protects a baby plant. They do store food foor the baby plant. All seeds do not have two cotyledons. Some such as corn have only one cotyledon.
What do seeds need for germination?
When seeds get enough water, air and warmth they grow into new plants. They do not grow if one of these is missing. Seeds use the food stored in the cotyledons to grow.
The growth of a baby plant from a seed is called germination. They baby plant is known as a seedling.
Dispersal of seeds:
If plants grow too close to eachother, they will not get enough space, air, water, minerals and sunlight. Under these conditions, they cannot grow into healthy plants since a plant produces a large number of seeds, nature has provided means of scattering the seeds far and wide so that crowding is reduced.
The scattering of seeds away from the parent plant is called seed dispersal.fruits and seeds are scattered with the help of wind, water, animals and explosion of fruit. Wind, water and animals are called agents of dispersal.
Wind dispersal:
Seeds that are scattered by wind are usually small and light. Dandelion and cotton seeds have long and fine hair surrounding them. This makes it easy for wind to carry the seeds away. Some seeds, such as maple and drumsticks have wings attached to them, which help them float in air.
Water dispersal:
Seeds of plants that grow in or near flowing water may be dispersed by water. These plants have drugs and seeds that can float in water. For example, water lily, lotus and coconut.the coconut fruit has air trapped between it's husk. This makes it light and easy to float. Water carries these fruits and seeds to far off places.
Animal dispersal:
We enjoy eating fleshy fruits such as mango, papaya and cherry and guava.after eating we throw the seeds away. This is one way of helping plants to disperse their seeds. Birds and animals also eat seeds along with fruits. The seeds are small and hard and they come out of the body as waste, ready to grow. Seeds of guavas and berries are dispersed in this way._

Grass is a type of plant with narrow leaves growing from the base. A common kind of grass is used to cover the ground in places such as lawns and parks.Grass is usually the color green. Grasses are monocotyledon herbaceous plants.

Many grasses are short, but some grasses are grow tall, such as bamboo. Plants from the grass family can grow in many places and make grasslands, including areas which are very arid or cold. There are several other plants that look similar to grass and are referred to as such, but are not members of the grass family. These plants include rushes, needs, papyrus and water chestnut. Seagrass is a monocot in the order Alismatales.

Grasses are an important food for many animals, such as deer, Buffalo, cattle, mice, grasshoppers, caterpillars and many other grazes. Unlike other plants, grasses grow from the bottom, so when animals eat grass they usually do not destroy the part that grows.[2] This is a part of why the plants are successful without grass soil may wash away into rivers (erosion).
