This indicates how AL Jolson was a singer for all time, and registers any time!

It's sad how many people villainize Al Jolson just because he performed in blackface. He was actually one of the biggest pro-black anti-discrimination champions of his time, and employed lots of black performers in high profile gigs at a time when black performers on Broadway was unheard of.

Don't be fooled by the blackface, Jolson was a great advocate for black actors and musicians, and often used his position as a singer to poke fun at white supremacy.

Why am I picturing a baby alien singing this across a diner table?

He was years ahead of his time in Race relations. He helped produce the first Black authored play on Broadway as early as 1911. He helped the careers of Black performers. He socialised with Blacks. Was friends with Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle, he went to the "fights" with them.

For those offended by Jolson's blackface, please remember it was a different time. Instead of criticizing, give thanks we've moved on at least a bit since then. Not enough, but some.

I don't know if this is the full song by Jolson (as I'm not familiar with his works), but this is just the chorus of the original song from 1899, so it's out of context and doesn't make sense. For those who don't know, it's about a guy wanting to get to know an operator better, who he talks to every day but has never met.

The great song you posted is the real Al Jolson, but the picture is from a budget LP on the Coronet label where the songs are sung by someone else. I actually like Coronet and other budget labels because they often included rare rock and doo wop under fake names and titles on some of their albums. You might enjoy "Rare Doo Wop on Budget LPs" on youtube.

It's important that we don't forget this happened in history, even though it is really bad.
