Gerotors

The most elegant mechanisms are usually the simplest. Consisting of only two components, the gerotor was first manufactured in the 1920s, and is still in use today in automotive engines, fuel and oil pumps, and hydraulic systems. The term “gerotor” is a contraction of “generated rotor” coined by inventor Myron F. Hill, who was the first to develop the principle geometry for the pump in the early 1900s. - The W.H. Nichols Company in Waltham mastered the challenge of mass-producing gerotors in the 1920s. Nichols was purchased by Parker-Hannifin in the 1980s. They still produce gerotors today at Nichols Portland.

That is what I do. I work at Nichols Portland in primaries where we use large compact presses to press metal powder into a part (gerotor outer or inner piece), then harden and primary size them in a sinter furnace. After that they normally go on a sizing press then to secondaries to get finish worked, cleaned, and packed. We also make other parts besides gerotors like transnission gears for GM, Ford, etc.

My dad has worked at Nichols Portland my whole life. It’s what got me interested in CNC work, although I think Parker Hannafin sold the plant recently.

The animation is not for gerotor, it does not have crescent seals as shown
