My head canon is that his sun god fruit was also why all his gear forms actually worked. Being rubber wouldn't somehow make all your bones be able to have air flow through them, a skeleton isn't one big connected piece. That would also explain being able to channel fire and electricity.

Alot of people say that luffy had the reality bending from the start but the thing is that he only unlocks them once he awakens his fruit it is still a zoan before awakening because it gives you the rubbery traits of nika but he can only bend reality because he awakened. Stuff like this only happens either because thats just how the one piece world works or because its a throwaway gag oda made and not supposed to be taken seriously
