Sitting above the Formentor in terms of size, the Ateca shares similar dimensions to a Volkswagen Tiguan or Skoda Karoq. It actually shares its ‘MQB A1’ underpinnings with the Karoq as well as the Volkswagen T-Roc.

There will be only one Ateca available locally, but Cupra has chosen the most potent powertrain available. It will use the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo as the limited-edition Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR, which has been tuned to make 221kW/400Nm.

The Ateca will have a seven-speed DSG and all-wheel drive to complete its performance package. According to Cupra this is a quick small SUV, taking just 4.9 seconds to launch 0-100km/h.

It costs $60,990 in Australia. Options include Brembo brakes ($4050), an Akrapovic sports exhaust system ($5950) and a panoramic sunroof ($1800). Dark Camouflage is the only premium paintwork option ($475), with the Nevada White, Graphite Grey and Magic Black metallic colours all no-cost.
