INVESTMENT DISCLOSURE:
I only make videos about cool technologies I would invest in, and in this case, I am an investor in Blanc. I have no long or short position in Netflix, but I am a subscriber to the service.

ABOUT JOHN COOGAN:

I've been an entrepreneur for the last decade across multiple companies. I've done a lot of work in Silicon Valley, so that's mostly what I talk about. I've raised over 10 rounds of venture capital totaling over $100m in funding.

I work mostly in tech-enabled consumer packaged goods, meaning I use software to make the best products possible and then deliver them to the widest possible audience. I'm a big fan of machine learning, python programming, and motion graphics.

A couple of years ago Netflix content was "Quality before Quantity" and now it is "Quantity before Quality"

The optimism expressed by John almost in every content is what the world needs more. Thanks man.

Content is King. Even though Netflix spend billions on content creation annually, the majority of what they produce is mediocre to bad. They dont just need to create shows that millions of people watch, they need content that will penetrate pop culture that will result in massive merchandise sales like Stranger Things has. Its easier said then done but Netflix needs about a 5 or 6 shows in rotation that are on the Game of Thrones and Stranger Things level to restart their growth engine

I speak as an indian, both amazon prime and disney+ (bundled in with a local streaming giant hotstar which already had a monopoly in the region) both cost about 20-30$ per year (10$ per month in the US) Netflix has a cheap mobile only plan for about 3$ but the standard plan costs about 8$ (14$ in the US), now why would anyone pay 24$ for 3 months of netflix when they can have a disney+ subscription for the same amount that gives them more local shows that cater to their interests? Unless they can further reduce the prices to 5$ or lesser I dont see them ever gaining much market share here!

The problem with Netflix is probably that they are not doing anything new, and the stock market expects growth but as they are not growing anymore their investors are probably losing interest in the company. What do you think ?

the solution is mostly that, Netflix needs to buy some of the other streaming brands, or even the brands merging, the lose of subs is due to the fact that peope are going back to piracy, since the content they want is scattered oove r4 different streaming services.

I think there are a few points missing. The translation sounds good, but going to movies is still a few steps away since a bad or awkward translation could ruin a good movie. Another point worth mentioning is that Amazon is pioneering a tranlation model that doesn't need to go from speech to text and then back to speech, instead they are trying to from speech in one language to speech in another, which may prove important to keep the correct intonation and intent. Finally it will probably always be a bit expensive to do a correct translation in movies since there will always be people doing quality control and retouching the movie to avoid gross errors. The technology will be ready when it is cheaper to pay people to correct the AI work, including the CG on lip sync, than just doing the whole translation. themselves.

All power to Rich, but audio is a deep, deep problem. People tend to underestimate how complicated sound is because they can't see it.
The primary thing that wasn't addressed here is when you are overlaying new audio onto existing audio, en masse, you are not accounting for background music, spatial sound and fx.
It's not a "cut and replace" type procedure, the same way that heart surgery is not just about replacing the heart itself, but connecting the valves back to the body as well.
Different languages are cool, but they were created before the entire world could be connected instantaneously. From my perspective, start-ups that progress the rate at which the entire world learns english would be a better use of energy.

The price of Netflix in India is 1.95 dollars so I don’t think that’s the problem cause it’s cheaper than cable but offers more

Yet another sign that the way we value tech stocks is horribly broken.

Almost every company has lost value and/or is losing value. Thats what happens in an economic crisis.

outside of mastering lip sync, how does an AI gonna determine tone, the example video doesnt show the podcaster speaking russian but more so russian imported in. basically how can you get the AI to translate to langauge as if the the speaker had known the langauge and spoke it themself. the russian translation didnt sound anything like the speaker and for wide scale, you dont want to hear the same voice across all pieces of content

I think they should first try implementing a 'already watched' button.

I'm not sure why Netflix has different audio and subtitle languages available in different regions. Like, some shows don't have English audio in Spain while the original show is in English. I find that completely stupid. Sounds like a stretch to go this far. But let's see. Thank you for connecting these dots. was not aware before. (:
