Me seeing that the area INSIDE the fence would actually be A=(L-1)*W, to account for the width of the fence, and that you need corner fence posts.

For anyone actually wanting to build the fence in minecraft the dimensions would be 5x12 or 6x10 both giving an inner area of 40 blocks.
The extra width comes from the fact that the corner fence counts for both the width and height of the rectangle.

this is one thing i did not expect to be watching today.

the total fence requirement for an area of 50 blocks including blocks covered by the fence is simply 18 because the two corner fences are included in the width as well as the length. this means you wasted 2 fences which could have been used to extend the length by 1 fence (each). the new maximum area is = 6 x 10 =60 blocks which is 10 extra blocks. i think the only reason the answer went wrong is because minecraft's block requirement to cover the perimeter is always less than the actual perimeter of the shape. (due to the corners being shared)

Things to note though:
1. In the problem, 5 is called a critical number. It can only be a crticial number if it is in the domain of the function.

2. There is the relative and absolute extrema. What they found is both the relative and absolute extrema. A relative extrema are points where the direction of the tangent line shifts from positive to negative and vice versa, like in the vid. An absolute extrema is where the function is lowest or highest. In the vid, since there is only one relative maximum, it is also the absolute maxinum.
