Bowdoin College Professor Joshua L. Chamberlain and his wife, Frances (Fanny), purchased a Cape Cod-style house at 4 Potter Street in Brunswick, Maine in 1859. Eight years later they moved the house a short distance to the corner of Potter Street and Maine Street, then in 1871 raised the house by 11 feet and built a new first floor. The Chamberlains lived almost 50 years in the house, which was acquired by the Pejepscot History Center in 1983. Today the restored home serves as the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum.
