Shaun White's First Skateboarding Gold: X GAMES THROWBACK | World of X Games

It's no secret that Shaun White is a groundbreaking snowboarder. But you might not realize that back in the day, Shaun was also pushing the envelope in Skateboard Vert at X Games. In fact, Shaun skated for Tony Hawk's Birdhouse brand before breaking out on his own, and even received his own Birdhouse pro model in 2007, just months before winning his first Skateboard Vert gold at X Games. This is a look back at that performance.

People might think snowboarding and skating is the same, but they are two different challenges. To win in BOTH is amazing.

What a talent...his first to runs were so pure and creative...and then he came clutch on his last run when you can clearly see him setting up and planning his every move

Shaun I just showed my 4 year old grandson this video, and he said you are freaking cool. Now he wants to learn how to skate board just like you and watch more of your videos. Love you Shaun

Would be cool if X Games would post the full events of all the past X games. I wanna see that build up to the Travis Pastrana double flip! Please X Games, make that happen and continue to release more full events

At this time If I'm remembering correctly, Shaun had won the first 2 Ast (Dew Tour) Dew Tour Vert Comp's (The Panasonic Open, then The Right Guard Open) before this. then after this just a week or so later won The Van's Invitational on the AST (Dew Tour) Dew Tour. And by end of The Vert Comp. at The Toyota Challenge in Sept. it was announced he was The 2007 Dew Cup Champion since he was able to clench just 1 or 2 points (I think). And I can't remember for certain, but he might have got 3rd. in that Comp. with Pierre Luc Gagnon getting the Win, and I think Bucky Lasek getting 2nd., then possibly 3rd. again at The Playstation Pro in Orlando Florida at The AST Dew Tour (Dew Tour). I remember he had this freak fall where he messed up on a trick going over a bridge of death/ and or a channel and hit his head on or near the flat bottom and wasn't able to finish skating for the rest of the Comp. and Pierre Luc Gagnon got 2nd.(If I'm remembering correctly) and Bucky Lasek got the win in that Comp. (just after his Wife gave birth to I think his youngest daughter at the time, who would be turning 14 this year.) So Shaun White got 4 big Vert Wins in a row that year. I feel that 2007 was Shaun's best year (in Skateboarding), with 2010 being his 2nd. best (since he got 3 Win's in a row on The Dew Tour that year., and Silver at @X Games) And 2011 being his 3rd. Best since he Won his 2nd. Gold in Skateboard Vert at @X Games 17 Los Angeles 2011, with I think 2 or 3 podium runs in Dew Tour. It would be cool if Shaun White came back to Vert at @X Games someday.

I remember Sal Masekela saying at the beginning of this contest something, like "The man on deck, Caw Caw The Hawk, Tony Hawk is gonna drop by..." And when I heard that I thought it meant Tony Hawk was going to be competing in vert for the first time since 1999, and competing at @X Games for the first time since 2003 when he won Vert Best Trick Gold with a 900(In Time), but he actually must've meant that he was simply going to be in the booth as a guest and there was going to be footage of him along with a bunch of other Legendary Pro's for what Sal called "The first ever Legends Session". where there were guys like Christian Hosoi (The first guy to ever do a Christ Air, and a Rocket Air), Steve Caballero( Who last competed at @X Games in Street at @X Games 5 San Francisco 1999, and the first to do a Caballerial), Steve Steadham (who was doing some great BS Bonelesses, and tried this crazy Handflip Boneless which looked sick who also put the whole Legends event together or something I heard Sal Masekela say, He was also in the first Bones Brigade Video shown skateboarding Vert (Pool/ Bowl) with Tony Hawk at Del Mar Skate Ranch(If I'm remembering correctly, in The Bones Brigade Video Show from 1984), Mike Mcgill (The inventor of the McTwist, as well as McEgg( a 540 Egg plant, the only other people to ever do that trick as far as I know are Bucky Lasek who may have first did it in 2009 at The Dew Tour, and Tony Hawk who I believe can/ has done them switch.), Chris Miller (who's in the booth commentating alongside Tony Hawk, Jim Coleman, and Sal Masekela), Lester Kasai (A good friend of Hawk's from the '80's), Dwane Peters (The Inventor of the Indy Air, as well as being known as The Master Of Disaster), and also Kevin Staab who has Toured with Tony Hawk allot in the past, nearly 40 years now, and is in the first Bones Brigade Video from 1984 titled The Bones Brigade Video Show along with Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, Mike Mcgill, Stacy Peralta, Adrian Demain, Steve Steadham, and there may have been more I might just not be remembering right now. As far as I know The Legends Session wasn't a contest, it was a demo, so there wasn't any Medals given out.

I remember seeing Shaun white skateboards back in the day and I thought they were a joke. I always knew he was a sick snowboarder never knew he also is a ridiculously good skateboarder.
