Inside Karan Johar's Bachelor Pad in Mumbai | AD Visits

A sweet, long friendship is the special ingredient in this "subtly over the top" bachelor pad designed by Gauri Khan for her friend and client Karan Johar – inarguably one of Bollywood's most influential film-makers.

When Johar decided that the approximately 5,500-square-foot apartment extension to his penthouse home, nestled in a quiet cul-de-sac off Bandra’s Pali Hill, needed a gut renovation, Khan was the only choice. The home with its wraparound terrace served Johar, his mother Hiroo, and his twins Roohi and Yash tremendously during the lockdown. “It’s such a vast space, and with no furniture around, the kids could run around and play. Every evening, once Roohi and Yash were done with virtual schooling, we would gather there for chai, and get in some family time.”

His brief to Gauri was simple: Convert it into an airy, one-bedroom bachelor pad and get it done fast. “At 50, I wanted this to be my very own space — with a large living room for bringing my friends together, and a bedroom with, of course, a massive wardrobe. I joke to Gauri that what she’s created is not a walk-in but a run-in, and my bathroom, well, you can play cricket in there!”

If the house looks soulless, it was probably designed by Gauri Khan.

I don't know if the celebrities have a different taste than humans but to me every house designed by Gauri Khan that I saw looked depressed and lifeless.

I'll be honest AD, this video was more Karan and less interior.

The fact that the house was the epitome of maximalist modern and yet Karan stood out more than the interior, speaks for it self on how accurate Gauri Khan’s vision was for this luxury hotel themed house. 😂 love to see it.

Gauri khan made it look great but the feeling of warmth of the house was missing

Now a days people are really liking to make their home like a seven star luxury hotel.... I mean home is where you feel the most humble, simple and like a human being. I would never get my house done like that!

Yes, it's soulless. I read one comment. And, I find it's true.

When you have no personality to stand into your own- You overdress when unwarranted, and overwhelm your senses in your own home by making it look like a luxury hotel or a museum.

Why it feels more like a hotel than a house. I mean home is the place where we feel connected. It is more like an experiment" ohh it can be like that this.."

Would've loved to have actually learned about his home. Narcissist vibes.

He spoke truth when he says at the end that his home is where he feels “confined.” His public image is oppressive in his “private” space. Hope he finds a truly safe space. 🙏🏽

As a decorator, let me assure this is styled to the nines. It is modern maximalism done very well: and relfects the person living there. Is it over the top? Yes, but like Gauri herself said, so is Karan. If this was styled for someone simpler, say Sonakshi Sinha it would certainly look more Indian, traditional and airy. I love the personalized elements - very materialistic like Karan - spread out everywhere like the Louis Vuitton trunk, or the Chanel 5 prop in the fireplace - or the very minimalist bookshelf - which I am sure are all fashion oriented books. We all know Karan is a man with a make up room and not a library in his home. I love that the family name is displayed prominently as a feature: showing a man turned into a father missing his own. Black as a color is highly in trend at the moment - and befitting when the owner of the home is so colorful himself. His home can be the blank canvas. I love the steampunk light fixtures in the bathroom. I also love the lighter colors and airy look outside. A huge red wall or painting inside would have completed the drama. Maybe that family portrait turned into a painting. ❤ 10/10 Gauri!

The wall paneling and murals & artworks are dope here! A true luxurious approach without mixing up excessive color palettes, yet maintaining a balance between functional and decorative elements.

I thought this was a trailer originally and was expecting a complete tour

Gauri would shop online or go to store and pick this and that and everything and calls herself designer.

Bachelor pad? I thought he had two foreign looking kids with blonde hair that he manufactured from somewhere?😂

Interior design to me is everything that this isn’t! To create a homely space where you want to unwind or feel cradled in or to create a cold glitzy lobby like space - take your pick 🤷🏻‍♀️. It’s sad that with all the resources at her disposal, the end result is always the same, they feel so generic after some time that you could say this is any other celebrity’s home. That being said, some people like this and want to replicate this catalogue feel in their homes
