What REPO Hides From You

R.E.P.O is a horror rouge lite that feels the like the child of Lethal Company and Content Warning. But in this whacky, heartpounding game there are quite a few things you can't see. Today we're heading out of bounds, going off camera, hacking the game, and overall breaking your immersion in REPO, to show you a neat behind the scenes look. Enjoy!

I've seen the Steam reviews about the emoji as a mascot and I get it, but what everyone misses is that the Taxman appears as emojis and usually that uncanny ROFL emoji, and if you and your team all die, then he will throw you away. He's the mascot cuz he's the main point of the game!

I love how the transport truck looks like a waterbear. I wonder if that has significance, maybe to suggest that the truck is armored so well that it's as indestructible as a waterbear.

The "glorious" joke was so high effort, you even started a multiplayer game just to get the lip-sync

The optical illusions they use are really cool to me. Idk why, i guess i like these sorts of things in game design because its almost like magic.

compared to the usual 'what___ hides from you' it sounds like you had a LOT of fun with this one

great video as always! one quick note, a rogue-LITE is a type of game where you are able to permanently upgrade your stats or gain abilities for all future runs. e.g. hades. a rogue-LIKE is a game where all runs always start from scratch, with no carry-over whatsoever from previous runs

At 10:39, this is because the game is made in Unity, using the basic NavMesh built-in system. So monsters can trace a path for naviguation and for following the player.
When a level is procedurally generated, the game will mark every walkable surfaces as good surfaces for monsters, even if the object below disappear. But only at the map generation ! Not during the game, so modifying the terrain will not have influence on the data.
So the marks' "data" tells the monsters AI that mark is a walkable surface, and without being in a "falling" state (where they have gravity influencing), they goes throught the void because they are walking on "data" that says that the ground's still there ;)

The clown is a level 3 monster
The first level will normally have one level 1 monster and one level 3 monster

a small clown with a massive laser sounds more terrifying then a big clown with a big laser

The Debugs are named after the devs! That's so cute!

Actually, (and I only say this to educate, because the difference between roguelikes and roguelites is often misunderstood or mistaken) R.E.P.O. would be a roguelike, not a roguelite. The difference is that in a roguelike, absolutely nothing saves between runs, every run has all the same things minus the procedural generation, while in a roguelite (like the binding of Isaac or enter the gungeon), there are things that are unlocked between runs, and thus at least SOME progress carries over.

The duck reminds me of Punishing Bird from Lobotomy Corp
- Both look silly in their normal forms
- Both open their mouths way too much to eat an employee after said employee does something to them (while flying)

when you first load into a map, 1 or sometimes more enemies depending on what level you are on, are already spawned in but are in a "dormant" state. they will become active once the player gets within a certain range of them (i think if the player is 2 or 3 rooms away? not sure) then the enemies will start to wander

Since ive been working on custom maps, ive noticed theres actually alot left over in the files too.
the "debug names" of the developers actually each have their own rooms too, meant for testing different items, valuables, etc. theres also leftover rooms of early tests of the next map, and a "recording studio" that i presume, they use for recording their devlog videos on their youtube channel.
another thing is that every room in the game fits into the same 3x3 generated area, and the doors are right in the center of the edges of that cube.

He really pulled a "here is everything about this game and more..." showing even the debugs, hahaha. That's like going up to an artist's portrait and start taking off the nails holding up the canvas. 😂
