Honestly I prefer both on different days. Sometimes you just want to mindlessly learn about something cool but harmless, and sometimes you want to spend 5 hours essentially getting a lecture about cheese

I prefer mine to be around an hour long, with the information copied word for word from existing books or articles, made out to be the creator's original work. I think it's just something about all the effort it took, and the basic editing really amazes me and keeps me engaged.

The last segment was incredibly intimate and I'm not quite sure how to feel about it.

My ADHD won't allow me to watch the first type, and feeling like I am wasting my time won't allow me to watch the second type either. I only watch medium-long form video essays that also have good editing, which is very few of them.

I've seen seemingly well made video essays, but then the subject is something like how social media is bad for your mental health, and the only insight the person making the essay has is "yup! that sucks doesn't it".

One of my favorite youtubers is an old geologist man who records his Mac screen with an external camera and has no editing at all, and believes the entire earth is made up of the body parts of dead giants. He's genuinely intelligent, but boy, his theories are wild, and he uses a feather to POINT AT HIS SCREEN. I love the videos because of the 'grandpa had some fun ideas and is telling them like fact' energy.

I like the long essays with just a tiny bit of editing to make them flow better and be more cohesive. It IS a little rough when someone really knowledgeable does indeed have -5 to their editing skills.

I love video essays that start with like, subscribe, ad and youtuber's entire backstory, and the actual topic starts 40 minutes in.

And then there's Folding Ideas, which is kind of the first one, but the topic is so dense I can't watch on 2x speed and still retain it.

There's a third type: the tangent compilation, which tends to be both informative and competently if minimally edited, but not necessarily all that helpful.

I love the tutorials that include the intro thats like 6 years long, then the title of the video, then the "please like comment and subscribe"
and the tutorial is explained in 7 pages of crap when you could sum it up in one sentence

As someone who enjoys grand strategy games I just love to put those 4 hour long essays on the background and listen to it as I play. You be surprised how many times you have to pause the game just to pay even more attention to the subject.
