How To Make a Knife From a Chainsaw Chain

Показать описание
Found a chainsaw blade. Better make a knife out of it. This one is for a customer, I may have another soon for a charity auction so stay tuned.
This project was a journey. Getting a nice tight pack with the chainsaw to start with is important and took 3 attempts. It must be forge welded as compact as possible with constant care not to create shuts. Without a press some gaps are inevitable. Surprisingly, it hardened up nice in fast oil and after a double temper this knife is razor sharp and holds a decent edge. The WOOD is Black Palm.
Process
First the chain is welded together as tight as possible.
It is welded to a rebar handle, heated and copious flux applied.
The links are tapped into a tighter configuration, more flux and heat.
The hammering commences. Frequent fluxing.
When you think all gaps are closed in every plane, keep hammering.
When the billet sounds solid through and through cut in half.
Arc weld together to handle and forge weld the two halves solidly.
Hammer to shape.
Grind to shape, quench in Parks 50 oil, temper at 400 degrees x 2.
Finish grinding.
