Though my 3.5 gas engine is running fine even with the oil burning issue (which I've reduced a bit with sea foam additive before a change), i still wonder what it would cost to switch to a diesel. Which size diesel would you say were the stou ones, and which was to avoid? Were the last ones a 3.0 turbo?

I also have a 98 trooper. And it burns SO MUCH OIL. it will burn a quart of oil in 300 miles. Does your rig burn?
also, do you have a lift?

I have tried a lot of different oils. And treatments. and cleaning. i have tried every trick in the book. currently running 10-30. It still runs like a champ, im just burning so much oil.

GM built motor. Can't blame Isuzu too much except that they got suckered into the partnership with GM. Isuzu put Diesels in originally which were incredibly stout motors until the last diesel they made which was also a joint venture with the D-max, which was riddled with issues.

I will say though, I love my Trooper and will drive it until it's good and rotted away.

Mine is 98. 98-02 is a different model than 96. aside of cosmetic they changed the engine. Mine is 3.5 and 96's should be 3.2 i believe. i still have my trooper and im planing to drive it from Los Angeles, california to Buenos Aires Argentina starting in june. i have 200k miles. Rebuilt transmission at 140k, blown engine at 180k

I have been really looking into the oil problem on the 98's to late 2000. And i have found a lot. that isuzu didnt put in enough oil drainback holes. Also that in 98 some of the motors were over boared, so they will burn even more oil.

@ale5jandro Forgot to mention but I added a 1" 1/2 spacer to all the rims. I could change the rims but I liked the original ones.

Mine consume like a quarter every 1.5K miles.
What oil do you use? I heard that they could be sensitive to the brand.
I'm using Pennzoil 10-30

What kind of work have you done to the troop. Did you upgrade anything on the drivetrain or front suspension. i.e. ball joints control arms sway bars etc.
