iCarly Revival (2021) Review - Why It Kinda Sucks

This is my review for the new iCarly Revival (2021) series on Paramount+. This video only covers the first 3 episodes that have premiered. I go over why I like it but also why I think it isn't as good as the original iCarly series.

All this reboot did was make me realize how boring Carly and Freddie are without Sam to bounce off of. If Spencer didn't exist then the show would just be like watching paint dry. It's all very low energy now. They need to bring back the background music and sound effects, give Spencer's apartment some color again (he's an artist for God's sake! get rid of the beige!), and stop the woke gen Z plotlines. I lean left politically, but I watch comedy shows for escapism not to hear about 'privilege' and 'cancel culture.' They also need to stop all this talk about the internet and memes. The other show included both technology and real world scenarios whereas the reboot only seems to focus on the former.

I think at this point Freddie is carrying the show on his back. Spencer’s comedic acting doesn’t really make me laugh as much now because the energy in the room is mainly an awkward silence instead of an over the top laugh and background music. Which brings up another thing... this shows budget is so bad compared to the original which was the most expensive kids sitcom. The Revival feels like a generic youtube red series that’s a spiritual successor to Liza on Demand then they throw in the iCarly cast for views

My 2 biggest problems with the reboot is the writing feels like it’s trying to appeal to those who grew up with the show but the writers think those people are still kids.

My second problem is the fact that there is a feminist statement or joke in EVERY episode. If it was spaced out every other episode I could live with it, but since it’s every single episode…I GET IT!!! It’s shoving things down our throats.

What I don't understand is why Freddie films Carly with a phone, it doesn't fit his character. Wouldn't he be using a Red Dragon 4k camera or something?

I'm hesitant with this show doing as well on the basis of it being more "serious" than an outright absurd comedy.

This show is shallow and bland. Although, the person playing Harper is doing her best with what she’s got, her character is not funny at all. Freddy is just as bland now. Bring back the writers that knew how to write Jerry’s hilarious lines. Even Jerry is getting short ended by the bad writing.

The new ICarly seems more like a Comedy Drama rather than a straight forward comedy

Not gonna lie, I feel like Harper and Millicent feel a little out-of-place on this show. Yes, I like having black women on this show because I like being represented, but that's not the point because they feel like they belong on a different show. It makes me realize just how much I miss Sam, Gibby, and T-Bo, especially the last two. It feels dry, and they don't make up for it. They have some funny moments but not enough to fully enjoy their addition to the show. I think, the only times they are really funny is when the two are interacting with each other than with the rest of the original cast. Take the Season 2 episode where Carly gets her own doll as an example. However, in some ways, I like Millicent better than Harper. I think the scenes they write for her character are a little better, especially since she doesn't have too many scenes where she's not interacting with any one of the original cast members.
