I live about 10 minutes from this airport, and I live directly under the flight path for landings, I have never heard of this event till now, what a lucky escape. I often hear the planes flying overhead at night and wonder who’s in them and where are they going. Even with the flight radar app, it’s a wonderful experience to just sit at the airport lookout and have an ice cream while watching the planes take off and land about 100 metres above your head.

As a former cabin crew senior with EK for over 20 years, I flew with two crew that were on that flight. They both reported the entire back of the cabin 'glowing bright red' as sparks flew past the windows, a strong burning smell throughout the cabin and passengers clearly distressed. Upon returning to the crew hotel some hours later (Hilton Hotel) shocked, stunned and incredible to be alive, all crew members received phone calls from top EK management stating that all their communications between family and loved ones are forbidden and that mobile phones and room phones will be closely monitored. Obvious that EK were not concerned over crew personal welfare.

I remember they had to get the plane from Australia to France for repairs. The plane could not be pressured so it had to fly at low altitude. I believe it needed to stop something like 4 times to refuel due to the high fuel consumption of low altitude flight.

Must've been loud and scary as hell when the tail end was scraping the pavement, thank you FlightChannel, I never miss any of your work, best of its kind on YT.

I was working at MEL when this happened, the airrcraft WAS a write off but EK did not want a hull loss on it's record so they paid to have it repaired

This proves that the flying crew has to be precise, meticulous and vigilant at the same time with all details from takeoff to touchdown, there's no margin for error in aviation when so many precious lives depending on your experience and skill.

Before anyone asks “why don’t planes just use full power all the time?”

1. Noise
2. Engine Wear
3. Fuel consumption

It never ceases to amaze me how such a small oversight can have huge implications! This is a great example of the need for communication and confirmation between the Pilot and Co Pilot! Thanks to TFC for another outstanding presentation!!!

I like it when TFC tells us what eventually happened to the accident airframe. Sound design was amazing. Thanks!

I live in New York and I used have phobia flying after what happened in September 11. But I had to kill that fear in order to see my mom in Puerto Rico in december 2016. I remember that I had a panic and anxiety attacks and the guy next to me sensed what I was going through and started talking to me to focus in something else. And it worked, and I won't forget that experience for the rest of my life..🤗🤗🤧😪 And now I can travel with no problem. And wherever he is I wish him the best luck..👍👍💯💯😇😇

Truly an amazing machine that even with a lb error they were able to get the required thrust to get airborne within seconds.

I sometimes watch flight videos where the first 20 minutes of video are the pilot and f/o running through a checklist, pointing at data on computer screens, and testing nearly every switch, button, dial and lever in the cockpit. It might look really boring to a layperson, but that attention to detail is literally lifesaving.

I love how the song you've been using lately (the one beginning at 09:25) has become more suspenseful and intense with subsequent videos!! Wish I could listen to it all the time :)

I’m A Citizen of Melbourne and I Remember my Parents watching this from their back window, at the time we lived in the Essendon suburbs (Which is 5 minutes from Melbourne Airport) My dad heared a massive scrape and looked outside to a A340, scraping its tail along the dirt and Runway lights. Luckily the plane took off in time.

Nice to see my home town of Melbourne included in one your recreations, despite the circumstances. Unreal that a single data input error could cause this - although now, thankfully remediated. Thanks for this and all your other great content Flight Channel.

It is easy to say this with hindsight, but I am surprised that the captain and first officer did not notice what would have been unusually low V speeds for take off for a 14 hour flight in an Airbus A340-500....
